Hi All,

I am awaiting delivery of a 2010 Suzuki Jimny Manual and just have a few questions which I'm hoping some fellow Jimny owners may be able to assist with.. :)

In regards to the initial first service, at what KM does this occur?
What does the manual state that the break in period to be for the engine, and what RPM it is suggested you keep it under during this period?

Cheers
Adam

The dealer (car yard) will tell you all that. I am guessing that you will need to go back after the first 1000kms. Most vehicles are at around 10000kms between services but the dealer will tell you all about it.

The break in period is the time from driving it out of the dealership to driving into carlovers to wash all the mud off. the quicker the better.

in 2001 my jimny was driven out of the dealership, nearly went through a red light about 30mins after, locking all 4 wheels up (no harsh breaking says the manual). with in 2 weeks swaybar was off and out in the bush with wheels in the air. 6 months old hit 80cm deep pool of salt water on frazer island at 80kmph and hitting a kangaroo on the way home. was all part of the break in period.

The Jim's on 200 000kms now no rust same engine, gearbox, transfer. its been through 2 rear diffs, 1 front, many cv's and 1 axle, a map sensor and a crankangle sensor, radiator, fan clutch, alternator brushes and a starter motor, a tailshaft plenty of rear wheel bearings and rear brake shoes. all mainly due to mud and carnage. no new car break in period could prevent this, but its been alot of fun between breakages

good on ya for buying the best new zook.

i dont know anything about buying new cars or what a break in period is but i do know that you will have a lot of fun and as gman says the sooner you get it offroad the better.

gman: did you have you bull bar on when you hit the roo?? howd it stand up against the roo??

Some crazy stuff there Gman!! How did the Jimny go against the Roo? I get wary of them in my mates Landcruiser.. let alone the Jimny. haha

I am hoping to take it camping on the Queens long birthday weekend to Newnes (Lithgow Area for you NSW'ers) and wanted to be see if there was anything to be aware of before hitting the trails.

I am getting Cooper ATR Discoverers fitted on it out the door so at least will have some decent shoes to play in the dirt with.

To be honest, have never brought a brand new car before and assumed it would be a similiar break-in method to my motorbike. Which suggested keeping it under a certain RPM whilst all the components bed in. More concerned about that than anything, as I know you have to give the little zook's some revs to get going!

If the new jimny's are anything like my girlfriends swift sport. At 1000kms they just go over it to make sure nothings come loose, but they dont drop the first oil till 7000kms from memory? its usually mineral oil then changed to synthetic at that change. Steky should know this.

Hiya,

When i got my 1L Sierra new, back in the 80's, they said to do a fair amount of shorts bursts of high RPM, as the piston rings will still be very tight, and this loosens them up/beds them in... and i think from memory, that it will take at least 5000 to 10,000kms to run in the engine, depending if you drive like a granny or like to rev the engine out, he he... and i think it was frequent servicing at every 2000kms, and the first service at 1000kms...
But this may all be different for the latest VVT G13BB engine...

Just googled new engine run in procedure... it amazing how many times AZ comes up in the results... but found this article, its old, but still relevant -

:hey: 1st service is at 1000km or 1 month. should be free. :P

Service interval's for new Suzuki's is 15k or 12 month's, which ever come's first, you can do intermediate service's at every 7500 which I highly recommend if you do alot of km's or are hard on it..
Run in. After your 1st service, drive it like you stole it.. :P

No bullbar with the Roo, it was a smaller fella and he was on the move at the time ( so was I  ) and headbutted the front axle housing some where, I did clench every part of my body at the time but was all good.

had another headbutt the bumper once too, which just pushed the plastic in and was easy to pop back out, did some damage to RH fog light thou.

Reading something on the international Suzuki website about how the M series engines are built, using similar methods to race engine building. when machining, they use a dummy head and bolt it to the block giving the stress the engines head would provide. the end result is a perfectly round bore with very little warpage. put simply allows for smaller tolances and less friction from piston rings. longer lasting engine

break in period... hmm...

first 20,000 i experienced high fuel consumption and well yeh pretty ordinary driving...

I changed all the fluids (engine, gearbox, transfere and diffs) at 15,000 and made sure that the engine had the Nulon Long term engine treatment, gearbox - transfere case and diffs has the Nulon Diff Treatments and its quiet smooth now...

In most cars run in is at 5,000km's, what was 40,000 a decade ago, cars must be more efficient straight out of the box... My missus's new Daewoo 'heap-a-sh!t' Cruze is run in at 4,000...

Some people like to run in their cars by smashing them as soon as they get them, but they fail to realise that their cars have flash memory that records events such as high revving and the like, and if you take your car in they will read this memory and make an evaluation on these variables that they come across... Maybe thats why Suzuki still fixes my Jimny a year after my warranty is out... Or maybe their scared?

Eitherway, treat your car with a little respect and use some good oils and addetives to reduce friction and you'll get more performance out of it and a longer life, thats not to say not to use it...

Love your post 'Gman'... Seems the Zook has had a good well traveled life.. Have your diff seals gone yet? Saw a 2005 Jimny for sale for $10,500 with busted diff seals... There's $900 worth of fun there alone... this thing looked like it traveled Australia but it was still quiet clean.

Gday mate, I'm glad i'm entertaining a few, lifes to short to be to serious all the time hey  In my Jim jims life there have been many repairs I think early on, the front Pinion seal went and the swivel hubs have been done many times. I do all my repairs myself as a Mechanic and a crazed Suzuki fanatic wouldn't dare let someone else touch my Jim for repairs if I didn't have too. It does save alot of money too.

I did mean to take care of my Jimny, but like all of us with adventure brings misadventure and when you go play you often afterwards have to pay.

I do believe some ECU's store info on driving patterns but this, as far as I'm aware is simply for the ECU's needs. especially Auto transmissions to help the car perform its best depending on how the driver is trying to make it perform. The memory of this info is not used buy any person as far as i know, to than look at you in a bad way and call Jimny DOC's on you and have you Jimny taken away and given to an unabusive owner

regular servicing, proper repairs and keeping it stock :cry:and some pride in your toy will go alone way in keeping your Jim jim on the road longer.

ha ha thats the same thing i said in another post... saw a near newish 4.8Ltr GU Patrol drag a 5 meter 10 tonne boat and trailer without the aide of any suspension mods (including no air bags)... drop it down a ramp which was reversed by the fella's missus and did it without any hassel... I really wonder if a Paj or IFS Landy could do that...

Will live axels be something of days gone by? I think Suzuki are sticking with what works best so far, even if its 30 years old...
