from what i understand, the 1.3 engine loves to rev, mine does not really want to rev past around 3750-4000, any tips on possible common causes of this? ( new exhaust/cat plans are in the pipeline) |

It couls be any number of things. I take it that it won't rev above 4k in any gear? What about in neutral? Are there any other strange behaviours that you've noticed? |

Ok, well have you tried anything so far? Or checked anything? I would say the carby is a good place to start.... Make sure eveything operates as it should. Check the choke operates correctly, then make sure your getting fuel squirting nicely through the jets. Check that when you open the throttle the vacuum actuated secondary butterfly opens, and go from there... |

Check that when you open the throttle the vacuum actuated secondary butterfly opens, and go from there... done plugs/leads, done the spray the carby out with cleaner, air filter, oil + filter, the secondary sounds like the culprit, I think a carby strip down & clean is on the cards this weekend |

update- I pushed it a bit further driving home from work(90km trip) & it seemed to like it the more i revved it, I got it up to nearly 4500 in third, cruised at 3500-4000, couldnt tell you what speed as my speedo cable decided to let go, I just couldnt help the feeling that I was flogging the absolute arse off of it though, but it definitely did do a lot better once I got it to rev a bit further each time i went through the gears. |

ok, update, the problem is that the secondary isnt opening, it does open if i open the throttle up by hand and then open the secondary so the butterfly isnt stuck, there is a nice jet of fuel coming into the carby too btw, it seems that the diaphragm isnt pulling the secondary open, i accidently pulled off the little 50mm (approx.) black rubber pipe off there, i can see where it goes on the diaphragm but not where the other end goes, anyone able to help me out? I am going to clear all of the little rubber buggers tonight but I need to know where the other end of the above mentioned pipe goes, thanks in advance guys. |

Have you confirmed that the secondary isnt opening. They will only open under load. Free reving the car or playing with the throttle linkage wont cause them to open. Try putting some blu-tack on the linkage and taking the zook for a drive. See if the blu-tack has moved when you get back (dont need much you just want it to show it has moved somehow, not hold the arm in place). Layto.... |

Layto.... Layto....... I have had a look & the secondary vaccum has an air leak around the shaft that come out of the bottom so there is no vacuum effect which is in turn not pulling the lever back which allows the secondary to open, if i pull the lever back and hold it by hand the secondary kinda works like a mechanical secondary (if that makes sense), i think i am gonna just replace the carby with either a weber or a vit carb, thanks for the help though. |
