Post subject:  Vitara rear diff.
G'day all, new to the forum.

I own a 97 SWB Vitara, had it for yonks. I'm currently sticking an SR20 in it, 5 speed from the SR so only rear wheel drive.

Please don't hate me for it :D I've done so much fourbying in it i've decided to turn it into a sleeper for the street.

My question/inquiry is, i'm in the throws of rebuilding the rear diff ( new seals, bearings) and have thrown in Phantom Grip conversion plates to make it LSD (we'll hafta see, anyway). But, I think i've jumped the gun a bit, because i'm not sure just how much power I can actually put through this diff. he SR will be standard with a 3" exhaust, FMIC, so i'm tipping about 150 kw atw, give or take.
Does anyone have any info on what it can actually handle? Or info regarding centre swaps or complete carrier swaps ( such as Hilux)?

Any info will be greatly appreciated,

I think you will be fine aslong as you don't sidestep the clutch at 5 grand. The vit rear is a similar size to yota anyway. Just see how it goes.

:P call it a need to know, Bugsta's did SFA & I'm curios to see if that was improper fitment or if thay work at all.

Thanks for the info, yeah i'm not planning on thrashing it, i've put too much time, energy and money into it to go do that!

there was a superchagred commodore v6 drag vit on ebay a while back that ran some stupid time on the stock diff

remember in low range the torque to teh diff is multiplied by the gearing so if it holds up to that then the same levels in high range will be fine

that's what I bought to put into a FWD turbo. I've heard good reports from people that do have them in but I sold the car just before installing it. If installed incorrectly, it becomes unpredictable when it kicks in. A bit like a worn out LSD.

I think boostedzook should get a mini spool type diff locker that will give even drive through both rear wheels.
I've heard there are a few people that are using ARB airlockers at the drag strip for 9" ford diffs.

In my opinion If you want more power out of the zook, give the motor a freshen up by rebuilding it, get the head rebuilt and ported, stick a new camshaft in there, add an aftermarket ECU and enjoy. It would probably cost just as much than buying the SR20 and getting the conversion done, You will have a new engine that will last along time and you'd still be able to enjoy going offroad.

Royce, I like your point with the gearing, didn't think about it like that, cheers.

Buzbox, I actually already have the motor and gearbox mounted, so i'm kinda comitted now :lol: I was initially thinking of doing this, I actually had the stock motor turbod for a while. I just want good power but reliable power aswell, the swap made sense from that viewpoint. Plus i'm doing it all myself or by a mate except the structural welding, which is finished, so costs are low(ish)!

I thought about air lockers but then found the PG, thought i'd give it a crack.
Having the standard motor turbd was enough to keep up with most v8's, their faces alone will prevent me from having it as anything other than a street car now! :D
