Post subject:  How to change CV Boots ?

I've always left this job to be done by a mechanic, but since I have them out at the moment. Can someone explain to me how to change the CV boots.
Thanks,

easy way is to pull the inner joint off by first separating the inner from the outer by removing the retaining ring, then the inner from the shaft by removing the circlip on the end of the shaft, then just slip the boots off, slip new ones on the same way and put it back together :)

x2 on what royce said.

once you have the old boots off there is a retaining ring that sits in the groove as seen at the top of the cup, in this photo.

Image

it is a wire ring & a flat bladed screw driver will lift out of the groove, it's a C shaped ring.

the CV will now be able to be separted & there is a circlip on the end of the saft that holds the balls & cage on the shaft it's located inside of that star looking thingo on the bottom of that photo, you will be able slide the balls & cage off as one.

you'll need to clean the grease off the star thingo & the shaft to be able to see the circlip.

you wont need to hit anything removing the inner, to get the outer off it needs a little tap :)

Umm I don't seem to see or feel a retaining clip. I'm doing it now to get it ready for a little test trip tommorow.

This is the driver side CV

Do I get a bigger hammer?

push the cage back into the cup & clean up the grease from the top of the inside of the cup, it will be just down from the top edge.

the balls, cage & center spider bit should all hold it all together as one unit.

are the balls seating properly in the cage or did they fall out when you remove the cage/balls/spider from the cup?

buzzy is finished and is about to bolt the wheels back on after the big diff and cv overhaul, anything he should pay attention to before/after his test run around the block? also tomorrow should he be careful of anything when out in 4wd on the tracks??

hmmmm, that's not cool... that CV didn't sound right with the balls falling out of the cage.

i'm running these & they seem to be holding up alright, but they're for the later model vits

Yeah, I installed it properly, It was held in by the grease like royce said. They fell out when I was cleaning it. I used some fresh grease to hold it in place and slid the cup back on.

But I now know why it broke...

with this driver side cv, once you take the shalf out of the cup, could you put that shalf onto a 3bolt pass side cup? or are they diff lengths?
i have a stub side cv that is redundant now that im running two 3bolt ones, would be good to make a spare out of

i'm sure they are the same length.

the stupid bloody idiot that installed the diff, put the bolts in the wrong hole which caused the CV to sit at an uneven angle compared to the pass. side CV. A little bit of down travel and grip, well you know the rest.

Bloody bastard, I punched him in the head !!

hows the black eye...

the right hand diff drop bracket uses the 2 top holes & the bottom front, i was wondering why you had to trim the bracket.

umm, yeah..

I'll figure something out, perhaps weld a piece of flat bar at the end of it and take advantage of the spare mounting hole.
