Heading up north in the next fortnight (3000+ km round trip) and want to be sure I'm running the right stuff after my recent rebuilds.

TRANSFER:
Rebuilt with 6.5's around 1000km ago - 800km 2wd, 200km 4wd. After rebuild I put Nulon 75W-85 Smooth Shift (synthetic) into it with 75mL of Nulon G70. Should I be dropping the oil and redoing it about now? If so should I go 75W-85 again? Still whirrs a bit but changes smoothly.

ENGINE:
Rebuilt about 6000km ago. First run was mineral oil to 50km, then mineral oil to 1000km, then Castrol Magnatech 10W-40 (I know, I know :oops: ) for the last 5000km. Recently swapped that out for Nulon 10W-40 "fast flowing" synthetic. Decent oil for a recently rebuilt G13B or no?

DIFFS:
Was running Nulon 80W-90 diff oil with G70 additive. Had front and rear Lockrights installed about 300km ago using the mechanic's diff oil. Added 125mL of G70 to each before taking it out on Saturday and the rear locker was noticeably better behaved on road - disengaged more easily and hence didn't load up and 'bang'. Should I be dropping the diff oil at some stage or are they right for xx,xxx km?

I think you have your answer :D

Sounds alright to me. I run Redline heavy shockproof in gearbox, transfer and rear axle, but castrol 80/90 in the front diff as I reckoned (possibly falsely) that the redline was slowing my airlocker engagement.

I love the redline but it seems to creep past seals really easily. It's funny stuff.

Gather from your post you the diff oil was changed 300 Km ago when the locker was installed.
And you have changed the transfer gear box etc your self.
Assuming the old stuff that came out was not to nasty, no lumps or fillings etc, you should be set for your big trip + many more Kms, before you have to touch it.
After having had work done recently, would pay to have a look underneath at the end of each day of your big trip and make sure there are no leaks, etc.

As far as viscosity, etc as long as you have followed the recomendation tools provided by the oil companies, eg;Penrite
Mobil etc, that will be fine.

Cheers Steve - will go with gut instinct, which is that synthetic 10W-40 should be about right for the engine, diffs will be okay without a change (seeing as there shouldn't be much wear in on the lockers) and transfer will get done after the trip - once the gear sets have had a chance to really bed in.

The transfer and diffs sound ok to me, you havnt dome many kms with the new oil, so they will be fine for many thousands of kms...
If you have just done the engine oil, when you switched from the Caltex, over to Nulon Synth, the engine should be fine as well, it wont need changing for the next 5000kms... so i would say your alright to head off ! :wink:

Just dont forget to take plenty of pic's of your travels, he he... :wink: :lol:

Sorry Paul - posted before yours showed up. Everything that's come out was just dandy and the diffs were done back in Adelaide 6000km ago anyway so they've had a double flush out in that time. Will absolutely be checking fluids and undercarriage daily.

Only thing I don't like about the oil company recommendations is that they're based on an 'old' drivetrain - mine is nice and tight and doesn't need the heavier oils they recommend. Most oil manufacturers recommend 15W-40 or even 15W-50 engine oil but mine runs 10W-40 without burning a drop over several thousand kays.

Definitely! Just bought a suction camera mount and some protective gear for my digicam so I can hang it out the window like ninjamoses does! :D

getting my lockrite locker install tomorrow, with nulon 80w90 with G70 additive, is it ok to put that same oil/additive in my manual gearbox? as im starting to have gear engagment issues (new clutch needed)
