Every time I check out yankee Samurais online i'm noticing how popular the harley CV carb conversion is becoming over there. People who've gone this option always give it the thumbs up - 30mpg on a stocky (~8L/100km), more power at the pedal, no stalling, and will pass any pollution check for RWC (Californian pollution laws are the worlds toughest). Costs around US$600 after checking the parts list. The CV is a dead simple carb as far as maintenence and tweaking is concerned too.
Any Aussies done this conversion? Can't do it myself running LPG, but curious about it anyway.

True - most harley service places charge like they're dealing with Ferraris too.

My boss at work runs a Harley, he said the carbs are a piece of piss to work on, very basic. Rebuild kits are readily available. He seems to think that they would sell for about $300ish. Could be a goer!!!!

$600 has to go a looooooong way to EFI
I'd rather fit a $50 SU, same principle and there are a million different needles available

I totally agree. Plus you would have to make a manifold

My old man never had issues when he had twin SU's, single SU, standard carby or SS carby on his harley.
i think anything side draft would be good for angles, a guy around here put a 1" n somthing side draft off a mini on a 1 litre. It would be a bit of messing around to set up i reckon.

nandor85 is running quad motorbike carbs on his coily, they might make more power but what's the point if you're scared to get them wet when going off road due to the lack of a suitable air box.

HD CV's are pretty much a set and forget carb too. Gotta be a million modded harleys out there too, so i'm sure there's no mod that hasn't been done a thousand times before...
I think lowrangeoffroad.com has a complete kit for a CV changeover on a Sierra/Samurai (couple of other sites out there selling them too) - comes with new accelerator cable, gaskets, manifold adaptor for CV, intake piece, K&N filter... all the kit required for a changeover.
Shit, if I didn't run LPG i'd be all over it. Might even be dumb enough to try it with LPG down the road if I find a nice big bag of money... just gotta work out how to fix an LPG mixer ring to the end of it.
My only concern would be making sure the engine is breathing properly without the stock intake

They'd have to be able to handle some pretty severe vibrations hanging off the side of a Harley motor too!

Are carbies emo?
*gazing though dyed black fringe*
Wow, like everyone is so conformist with their functional, cheap and reliable EFI systems... I'm going to be an individual with my carby. Sure my car will drive like crap and I'll get bored with tuning it forever and it will cost me more than EFI in the long run, but at least I won't be conformist
*flicks fringe nervously and puts iPod earbuds back in*
Seriously, all the talk used to be about EFI, and now it all seems to be about these hairbrained carby ideas.
Carbies, drop shackles and ute chops...- welcome to 1997!
Has anyone mentioned that EFI is so well sorted for sierras now - it's cheap in the scheme of things, easy and just works. Really, it does.
I'd also guarantee that with a workshop manual and having done a conversion, you'll know more about how EFI works than you'd ever have about how a (emissions controlled) carby works.

what is an EFI conversion that we can do to a 1.3L? that works and doesn't cost a fortune?

There's dozens of TBI swifts sitting in wreckers all over the country. Whilst it's not a bolt in, it's not all that hard to fit - no harder than trying to get some whacky carbies to work.
There's also Escudo (JDM vitara) TBI's coming in too - that stuff sells for about $300 complete.
16V multipoint EFI Baleno's are all over the place too- use the 16V head and manifolds.
There's lots of options.
Steve.

Early Suzuki TBI systems pretty much get a univeral thumbs down from the posts i've read on various forums - for that reason I crossed it off my 'options' list. And to be able to install EFI for $300 you'd need a bulletproof skillset in mechanics, fabrication and electronics to get it right first time. Not to mention a bucket load of expensive tools, access to free labour, materials, a yard to sit a half-cut car in, a few weeks/months to tinker, a free roll on a dyno, and a 2nd car to get around in in the meantime. And if you stuff up you better be able to pin-point what/where/how/why it's gone wrong without costing yourself a trip to an expert who'll just look at you with a "you're fkn kidding me" look in his eye...
Carby's ain't so bad - and just because technology is 20 years old doesn't mean it's time for the scrap heap. There ain't a parameter on my car I can't adjust with a screwdriver, and for me there's a joy in that. I just don't need EFI.

You are talking yourself into believing the rednecks on the US forums you visit
EFI is simple, if you can fit a stereo and arent colour blind you can fit efi
a carby conversion like that isnt going to be straight forward either and if tis not right and not dynoed it will still be shit and youll be another on the long list of ooo my sierra carby is shit it wont work properly list, when really its all your fault

at risk of sounding stupid, so a baleno head will bolt straight onto a 1.3 sierra block? if thats the case then boo yaa, i can fit a stereo & arent colour blind so thats definitely gonna happen sometine in the next 12 months

Simple answer. Don't be curious. You have Lpg.
Efi rules now.
Carbs are poo.

Like I said in the original post, a HD CV carb install isn't necessarily for me, doesn't stop my curiousity as to what other people are experimenting with. If they're getting great results, bless their cotton socks for having a crack.
And if someone pops the hood, what are you gonna look at - the guy with an EFI install hidden under a plastic lump, or the guy with 4x ninja carbs bolted on the side? Different strokes for different folks, but I know where my eyes are heading.
And don't fool yourself, there's rednecks in every 4x4 forum... we just call em bogans over here. I got gun stickers on my car and bundy cans in my fridge, Street Machines in the corner, just not enough hair for a mullet any more... I know where I stand in the world. You guys aren't in denial are ya?
