So im my build up I was in a bit of a rush at the end to get it going to head back down here in briz. Needed some shocks just to get the whole thing complete and running so down to the local supercheap with my trusty measuring tape and ended up with some el-cheapo gabriel gas shocks off gods knows what to fit both the front and rear (think some bogan-a-dore/hilux/hiace combo that fitted my measurements).

Anyway as expected they do ride rough!! So now im in the process of upgrading to something descent with alot more control over the rough stuff both on and offroad. Springs have been pretty well sorted, OME light duty dakars with leafs removed.

So what are peoples thoughts on this topic? I was thinking along the lines of rancho 9000 XL's, tough dogs, koni's?

Dan

Care to spread your wealth of knowledge Joe? What shocks have you run in the past?

So anyone else out there running anything other than el-cheapo gas gabriels for commo's etc?

While on the topic does anyone have the compressed lengths the shocks should be on the front and rear with std bumpstops and std mounts handy??

Cheers Dan

Koni. Get your wallet ready though. Its gonna be bending over and spreading the cheeks.

i had efs they seem better than others ive tried, currently i run adjustable ranch 9000's as they are stupidy long, but i set them too hard one day, did a jump and snapped my shock crossmember in half.
I leave them on the minimum setting now

Why not just put some OME shocks on it? They are longest shocks you can run with stock mounts and stock bumpstops and are fairly well valved.

RS9000's are an expensive gimmick. I can't comment on tough dogs.

Koni's are excellent by overkill for a sierra with otherwise stock suspension IMHO. The shocks do very little on a leaf sierra with stock length springs/mounts etc. It seems silly to spend lots on very high quality/expensive shocks.

Standard sierra:

Front NT and WT - 256 compressed, 415 extended
Rear NT- 283 compressed, 454 extended
Rear WT - 283 compressed, 442 extended

Thanks mate, im assuming these measurements are from bottom washer of the top pin to center of eye and center of eye to eye respectively?

Cheers Dan

2Stroker: Are those the lengths of the standard shocks, or the longest possible shocks you can fit (or both)?

So Joe what exactly is so bad about foam cell shocks? why are they not suited to a light 4wd? I hope to be a sponge and learn something here.
