Post subject:  Swapping wheels!
Hi!

I was just wondering if anyone on here has two sets of wheels - one for the road and one for wheeling?

235 muddies for offroading and keeping my 215s with all-terrains for the road.

215's for sand and basic touring, but 235's for the tougher tracks!

Thoughts?

I run 2 sets on my sierra 32" pedes, and 26" bridgestone AT.

My Bridgestone AT will wear out soon, and will be most likely be replacing with a set of 31x10.5 BFG AT.
The AT will be for on road, touring and summer trips.

Its a bit of a PITA but, cheaper in the long run as I use mine as a DD

the main reason most people do that is because the mud tyres they have r poor quality on road but after a while u will just get lazy of swaping tyres over all the time for trips and stuff u will just leave them on

+ ur speedo is gonna be out so u have to rememeber 2 different ratios with ur speedo (mainly if tyres r major difference in sized u should be fine)

but its really up to u and if u can be bothered changin tyres before big weekends

So it comes down to what are the best mud tyres to run on the tar. Run one set and that is that. It still means a compromise slightly less grip in the mud and a little more noise on the tar. What u reckon?

I have been running baja claws for over two years, as a DD with no noticable wear.

Heavier trucks, maybe but with a zook, there is no need for play shoes IMO.

My pedes have only a few thousand kms on them, but you can see the wear.
Plus they handle like crap, and are terrible on wet tarmac.

Im doing a small trip in the zook next year and dont want to burn through my pedes (which is why I am getting the AT)

Yeah I sort of run 2 sets of tyres. Problem being now I have two running zooks, I have to swap the 2 sets of tyres between the 2 cars, depending which car is doing what...

It seemed like a good idea at the time, But I am over changing tyres, been doing it just over 2 years now, and it sucks!

My future plan is just for less aggresive tyres on all my cars, so I can just get in it and do whatever the hell I like with it. My current road tyres are 31" Firestone Destination M/T's, and I might just end up putting a set of them on some steelies. Silverstone Extremes are just too crap on road, and too expensive these days for me to bother with another set. As for wear, less then 10,000k on them, and about half tread, they are much softer rubber compound then most things out there.....

interesting you say that - my pedes are brilliant on wet roads - far more grip than the cooper stts i had on before that, and the coopers had more grip than the cooper HTs i had before them!!!

my pedes have worn alot in a year of use - prolly about 15,000km. I had some really bad wear when i first put them on and they've settled now though.

Vermin, I don't think that swapping tyres is a bad idea, but I think you ned to specialise more between the two sets. Specialisation of task for each set is more important than the very small change in size you are contemplating.

I used to run two different sets of tyres on my Hilux many years ago. I ran 235 85 16 BFG AT's on road and 9 32 16 swampers offroad. Both tyres were the same size (the largest size I could easily run on the car) but each was relatively specialised for its task.

I don't think there's any point swapping between two sets radial tyres with decent road behaviour. (which seems to be what your angling towards) In your position, I'd be looking at something like an aggressive AT pattern in 235 on road and a narrow agressive cross ply tyre like a 7.00X16 for off road work.

I actually swap between two sets of swampers on my car depending on what I am doing. For dryer technical trips I run Q78 15 swampers and for wet trips I run 9/34 16 swampers. In wet weather high ground pressure is more important than overall footprint so the 9/34's work better.

i think you should jus get 235 muddies and sell me your 215s :lol:
i sort of regret selling mine to dm90 :oops:

I have 3 sets of stockers at home. ..

I'd rather drive on 33' muddies.

Yes ilegal, but on mine, stockers in wind used to blow me over lanes on a freeway...Scarry stuff fighting wind all the time.

Also stockers would have no chance with a 1.6efi and rear mig locked. :twisted: Its nutso in wet too. Feels like 400hp at the wheels. blip of throttle round a corner...whoa suzy! :lol: (also does it with 33's, but less.)
