Post subject:  Vitara miss
Gday guys just a quick one for yas.....this arvo when i went to leave work i started my car and it was running real rough like it was firing on two or three cyclinders when i gave it a couple of revs it sort of came back to normal but now it has a slight miss when idling :?
Now since i left work this arvo ive done about 100 kms and it hasn't done the rough miss fire again but it still does miss when idling....
So do you guys have an idea of where i should start looking??????
Oh yeah it's a 96 efi 1600 5 speed :P

have you washed it/has it been raining recently? mine did exactly the same thing after a tubbing and a quick squirt of W-40 in the dizzy cap sorted it...

We have had some quite cold nights with a fair bit of moisture in the Air, as the grass has been wet with no rain... i would check out moisture first, spray some CRC around the leads, dizzy and coil... also, just make sure one of your HT Leads isnt near the body of the car, had it happen in my Vit... :wink: :lol:

Funny you say that over the last couple of weeks its been droping down by about 1 cup full per week but i dont know where its going :?
There is no water in oil or vice versa :?

Im getting plugs and leads tomorrow arvo and do ya mean the coolant is going out the cannon????is that bad???

Out the exhaust pipe, maybe.
have a good look at the color of the plug's when thay out, do a compression test to if you can..

Can be seeping into the cylinders when the engine cools. To test this fire it up in the morn, if it miss fires kill it straight away and look at the plugs. If one is wet with coolent thne you have found your prob. Could be a headgasket.

Did you try the WD-40? It's not the most complex solution but better to start with the simple stuff. I though mine was farked, missing heaps and running really rough - just for some moisture in the dizzy cap. May not work but if it does it will save some head scratching...

if it is using water and you don't know where it is going its more likely be the head gasket

I cheaked the coolant level this morning and it hasn't droped at in the last week and a half so i think it was just going back into the over flow bottle :roll: :lol:
When its doing this miss it only does it when idling not when under load or driving along and it hasn't lost any power so i dont think it would be head gasket....

clutching at straws.... are any of the plug leads touching each other, cable tied together? pop the bonnet somewhere where it's dark, fire it up & check if you can see any spark jumping from one lead to the other.

Well i went to four different shops this arvo and no one had any spark plug leads for me so i just changed the plugs and hey presto she is running sweet :P

$800 for a second hand one with three month waranty or $1500 for a full recond box with fitting included in that price so im going a recond jobby just for peice of mind as late next year we are driving to Cairns so better to be safe then sorry....

Ha ha... 4000kms of a Soft Top flapping in the wind would drive me insane ! :evil:
And you feel the temp outside more in a Soft Top, and a SWB dont hold alot of stuff for a 4000km journey... :? at least the LWB Vit would be more suited to that kind of longggg journey, and it can carry more necessities... :wink: :lol:
