Post subject:  Jimny - gonna change the brake pads
today i wanna have a go at changing the front brake pads.

any tips/things to watch out for??? anything else i should be checking while im changing them???

i read somewhere that you should put a bit of copper grease on the shims to stop squeaking but i dont have any grease, is it really necesary??

Not 100% no.

It's an easy job, just push the piston back slowly & suck some of the fluid out of the master cyl, or crack the bleeder nipple.

just dont get any brake fluid on your paint work.
a g-clamp makes pushing the piston easy

If the pads are badly worn, you might have to push the piston in just to get the new pads into the caliper, let alone over the disc. You might find having 3 hands helpful, or just simply remove one caliper retaining bolt and loosen the other and flip the caliper over and leave it bolted to the mount bracket. Helps to keep it secure while you push the piston back.

And keep checking the reservoir fluid level as you push back the piston; it will rise! If you've never topped up the brake fluid, you will have enough volume so that it won't spill over.

If you've pushed the piston in so far that the new pads don't contact the disc surface, don't worry! the first brake application will seat the new pads.

DON'T push the brake pedal with the calipers off or the pads out!

i have to order some in cause repco or supercheap dont stock jimny pads

any particular brand i should get or are they pretty much all the same??

i did rear shoes in the back of my vitara today & it's pretty straight forward, when putting them back together I ran a tie down strap around the shoes to stop them spreading while trying to get the top spring in & the adjuster in.

a 3rd hand would have been ideal.....

fuck me , I know zook owners can be tightarses but try buying a workshop manual or even better download one.
they tell you how rebuild the whole friggen car with all these cool thing like min and max tolerences, the best tool to use and even pretty pictures.
every thing a unmechanical noob needs.

I have the downloaded mechanics workshop, but as far as i know they dont make gregorys manuals for jimnys. also its not a bad thing to get a second opinion or to see how someone else has done it or get little tricks that people can pass on. i have never done break pads before so just thought i would ask.

i had to settle for standard car bendix break pads as they dont make 4wd ones for a jimny, only other zooks.

will put them on tomorrow, thanks everyone for ya help.

hey guys,

one last question.

put the pads on today, surprised at how easy it was. they really needed changing, pic for comparison.

the break fluid in the master cylinder rised to above the full mark so i might drain some but i think it should be right.

but wasnt too sure about the anti squeak glue stuff. is this what it is supposed to be like??

That will do, but ideally you want it where the caliper touch's to, the jim's had a squeal that was the piston vibrating on the pad, bit of stop squeal & fixed.. :P
