Well you already know i'm insane.. So i'm just putting this out there lol

You can't put a heavy engine into a Zook right? But i still want a bit more power and low-end
Here is a 1983 Peugeot.. 5speed, rwd, 2.4L turbo diesel
I could no doubt flog the tyres off and sell the bulk of it for scrap.. And the engine+box wouldn't cost me more than a couple hundred

I'd do a Vit engine swap, but yeah.. Not gonna happen without more funds

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... ne=&N=&Ns=

It can't be worse than this bloody 4K engine right?

Not sure about that...

505 SR had 74kw and 160Nm. Torque is very good @3000rpm, but the extra weight of it AND its gearbox will be insane!!

Big and heavy motor swap there. :?

I thought it would've been reasonably light.. Meh
Guess i'll have to rob a bank and do the 1.6 EFI swap.. Sigh

OR! I have a Turbo'd 1.3L Escort Cosworth Lotus engine+manual box in the shed
But maybe i'm dreaming again
I'll just turbo the bloody 4K..

Most of the new gen CRDI engines are light, but mid 80's will be a massive cast iron lump of shit. Even the euros. They usually have thicker castings too, AND cast steel heads for the higher compression.

A new CRDI golf GTI motor would be ace!! Just don't ask how much

It's a 1.3L Turbo Lotus engine FROM a Cosworth.. Atleast to the best of my knowledge, we have the Escort sitting in the shed.. And the motor was going to be swapped in

And i'll be running mine SPOA on 33's.. But i'll pick up 5.28:1 R+P gears

You say turbo the 4K? Too much work.. I'd swap the 1.6 EFI in for less $ most likely

the BDA cosworth escorts came out in 1.8 & the lotus twin cam in the mk1 cortina was a 1.5 & then 1.6 in the mk1 escort

if you can push your diff right foward to keep the weight behind the wheels it wouldn't be a bad swap.

But this is comming from someone who bought a 3.5 rover V8 + gbox and transfer to put in a zook (unregisted of course).

I can't see a (big) problem with a rover V8 as a silly swap into a sierra, especially as they come with one of the best autos ever (4 speed ZF) are injected and make lots of lovely low end torque. Even the transfer is nicely designed and geared for use in a sierra.

I think the key with diesels in sierras is that they have to become a totally different sort of car. Taller geared and with less punch offroad due to the lower rev limit - which works against the light weight and agility of the sierra.

Steve.

PS what on earth is a 1.3 Escort Lotus Cosworth?

The 3.5 Rover has twin SU carbies. It's the 3.9 and later that had EFi.

Discos and Rovers are different, far as I know, rover 3.5s were all carbs.

According to the compliance plate on my desk it was a 5/87 Range Rover EFI 3.5L.

its the very first model to be injected, it was a fuck of a setup with a carby tank, external fuel pump sitting inside the drivers side chassis rail, had nothing but problems with the fueling, it was one of the big reasons it was parted out.

My mate also had a 86 model 3.5 but it was carby.

Yea I had the 86, bonza 4wd, but a bit like the 1.3l, gutless unless it was screaming its tits off, then it was awsome.

Weaves, do you know what the motion activated level control was called, it was connected to the rear diff, sort of midships, worked a treat.

Be grouse to get one fitted to a sierra, if it could be a quick disconnect.

I've been mulling this over my lunch break, even went to our other shed to look at the diff housings i have there and i cannot work out what your talking about.

I haven't spent much time around rangies so it's going to be something i dont know about, but looking at all the brackets on the diff the only things i can work out that attach to the diff are
2 x trailing arms
2 x spring plates
1 x driveshaft
2 x shocks
1 x A-arm with rose joint <<<-- is this what your meaning? has a big swivel ball on top of it?

Mate, that sounds like it, when you are turning hard, and the ole girl lays over heavy, flatten it, and quite quickly it will claw up level again, qalso load up the back, and it would, when under way, lift the car level fore and aft, so both thwart ship and fore and aft level ride, cool as.

The one I had years ago, I'm pretty sure, was an 86, red one if that helps hehe.

it's the boge self leveling system that was found on early hang overs, from memory it was a 5th shock absorber mounted in the rear A frame somewhere/somehow.

Thats it, wonder if it could be adapted to fit a zook, I remember well how it worked and thought it was the duks guts.

The one I had had The Ultimate Suspension, haven't heard of them in donkeys years, but they were early after market, prolly one of, or the first of its kind.

I thought the level ride was a stock item, iron man hey.

Thanks mate.

Yeah the VW diesels would be the pick of the bunch. I used to dream about putting a 1.9 TD in a sierra but it is a fair bit of work by the time your source a motor (here in Aus they are not that common), work out a gearbox and then sort out the gearing so you can actually get to 100 :P

This is a fairly common conversion in the US from what I can workout.

Another option would be a 1.8 Gemini diesel, from memory I think there have been a couple done, but I don't see the benefit as that motor is very old.

Another option would be a 2l TD out of something like a hiace van but once again I don't really see the benefit over the far simpler, cheaper and easier 1.6 EFI G16B swap.

As for RR suspension... there are 2 RR's sitting on my dad's property... I am starting to think more and more that their diffs need a new home.
