Hi Folks,

With my 98 Jimny not running, and secondhand prices on recent cars astonishingly high (nice that Jimnys hold their value so well), I'm actually contemplating getting my first brand new car, if for nothing else than the peace of mind from owning it from new, and not having to stuff around with getting a 2nd hand one inspected etc.

So, are there any "issues" with the 2010 model that people know about? From reading the boards here, people seem pretty positive on the VVT engines.

I'd eventually like to get a small lift and some better tyres, but to be honest, the car is probably going to be a city runabout 99.9% of the time (for now at least) - the factory tyres just look undersized, so that has to be addressed. I remember a friend bought one new in 99 and had BF Goodrich all terrains fitted from the dealer - they outlasted the car (auto gearbox went). I thought that might be less expensive than buying it with factory tyres then buying them separately (then again maybe the dealers just mark everything up).

If anyone has any pointers about tyre sizes (why can't there just be one single set of specifications, or at least comparison / equivalency guides on tyre company sites), and what the largest tyre I should look for without changing the wheels is, or if there's a low cost option for wheels necessary for a tyre. I just want to avoid doing a suspension lift or messing with my speedo for now, (it can cause warranty issues, yeah?) and get something that has a bit more "chunkiness" that matches the stance of the rest of the vehicle.

Also, anyone know of an aux input option for the stereo on the new Jimny? They only seem to have an iPod input option (dock connector that locks the device), which I've tried and don't like.

Hi matt, we have had our 2006 VVT Jimny from new and I do like the way the engine performs compared to my non-VVT Jimny. I'm not a fan of the push button 4WD activation but we've not had any problems with it although it's not been offroadmore than twice.

I'd talk to the dealer about the tyres they will still warrant. If they fit them they probably can't deny any claims. They'll definitely mark up anything you add.

Oh that's good to hear.

Um, this may be the most amazingly noob-ish question ever raised, but when you engage 4WD high or low, do you still use the 5 gears in the manual gearbox?

It's funny, but even without 4wd, the Jimny would still be the best city car I could want.

Has anyone heard a definitive policy from Suzuki Australia about it, or is it something that varies between dealers?

yep, all gears are able to be used in 4wd... i'd stay away from loading it up in 4th & 5th though.
