Post subject:  transfer case stuck in N, new transfer case?
hey guys first time poster so bare with me!

My gf just bought a sierra a few weeks ago and we had the problem of the transfer case lever getting stuck in Neutral the other day after being in 4L when trying to change back to 2H it got stuck in neutral. i tried rolling back an forth, changing while rolling using force but wouldn't go.

Ended up getting it towed to the closest gearbox mechanic,(which i had heard were a bit dodgy) the next day i came on the forum and found a lot of the same posts about the bush and realized i could have done it myself!

The gearbox place claim they have replaced the bush but it still wont go into gear and now it wont even move! they say it needs a whole new transfer case which will cost $1200!! :? but i fail to find any posts where the whole case has needed to be replaced. so i think the gearbox place is pulling a dodgy on her as i have heard they have before.


so my question is, could it be the whole transfer case? have they not put the bush in properly and made it worse? have they not replaced the bush altogether?


any help would be appreciated!!

Could be. I've been told when I do mine to make sure both sides are lined up properly or you will get results like you have.

Im sure you will get a reply here soon from somone that will know for certain. But sounds like it to me.

Even IF there is a bigger problem that the bush, you can get a T-Case for much less than 1200 and rebuild it yourself for even less...

But my mone is still on the bush, and the mechanic is trying to screw you...

yeah and its not my car its my girlfriends.. she didn't trust me to try do the bush myself!

ive told her don't let them put a new transfer case in no matter what because they are bastards!

it took them 2 days to even look at the car and then another to order in a bush and put it in!!

the problem now is that cant get it towed for free through RAA so shes in a bit of a pickle

surely there is someone in adelaide with a car trailer that would be willing to offer a tow for a carton of some form of alcoholic beverage.

Push it down the road 200m and call the RAA and say as soon as you pulled out the driveway, it happened again.

I bought a Tcase off ebay last year, in good condition for $30.


Tell them from me that $1200 is plain fucking criminal, and to eat my ass with a spoon.

It will take you 2 hours to swap a transfer case with another if you haven't done it before - Just do it in your driveway.

Call a tilt tray? may cost you $50-100, but way cheaper then leaving it there.
If I was local I will give you a tow.

They probably didn't line up the shift rails correctly , Tow it home and fix yourself , what were you doing when this happened , if you grab the shifter when in 4L , and yank it incorrectly it can jump out of the gate especially if you lift it up as well , if the truck was driving fine it would be hard to believe it is shagged , Take the shifter out and use a large screwdriver to re-align the gates , Cheers Paul.

mate where in adelaide are you? i will help you out but it might be late in the arvo/early evening, even up to 8-9pm, i work stupidly long hours, if you can let me know where you are, i will tow you by rope, if its too far to do that, if you can organise a trailer i will tow it for you with my car, sorry man but i dont have a car trailer otherwise i would just come get ya, i had the same problem with my t case, i bought a bush from bruce here and replaced it easy as, the hardest part is getting the part you twist back in, i will be happy to show you how i did it too if you want

hey, if you need help with doing the transfer bush i can help you if you need it. Like shansh wrote, it would be helpful to know where the car is so maybe someone from adel can help out.

faaarout this is a good forum!!! never had so much generosity from any other forum Ive joined! :o

thanks heaps for all the offers to help guys, but again its not my car! if it was i would've surely taken you up on them! also those pictures are sure to come in handy if it happens again

she ended up paying $80 to the RAA to tow it to suzuki which isnt too bad.

suzuki spent 25mins on it and found the shift rails were not aligned which is what some of you have suggested... so now the car is fine and running!

so the gearbox place PNG automotive on seacombe rd = absolute rip offs!!!!!

took 3 days to even look at the car and then charged $210 for 2 hours work 8O (should have been under 1 hour). then claimed after doing the 2hours work that a new transfer case was needed costing $1200 including install.

so either they have no idea what they are doing, or purposely didnt align the rails to claim that she needed a new transfer case. i feel it was the latter as ive heard that they are dodgy pricks who do un-necessary work! :roll:

i think her dad is going in tomorrow to have a go and show them a statement from suzuki saying it was improperly installed and to try get some money back - dont know how that will go!!

do not go to PNG automotive on seacombe rd seaview downs, highly UN-reccommended!!!
