Hello everybody, does any body know why a 1998 suzuki vitara with a 2 litre engine ,can only tow 450 kg braked, or with out brakes. A 1.3 litre jimny can tow 1200 kg with brakes,is it the clutch, or does it over heat, or the tow bar set up on the vehicle.Regards, luke.

Its the car.
It won't be the towbar setup or the clutch.
The capacity will depending on the vehicles brakes, and how the car is going to handle safely on the road. Its a light vehicle.
Whats the towbar plate say?
Another thing is what the rulings at the time seemed safe. Yes its weird that a lighter Jimny can tow more..
They both have similar front brakes. vit rears are bigger..

I chased this answer ages back, Suzuki au says its because they made a mistake, and it has stuck.
The AAA list it as 1,200kg braked and 450kg unbraked.

Engineers rate tow capacities all the time....
Perhaps a suspension and brake upgrade then a trip to an engineer would help?
