OK, on wednesday I found that the butterfly in my Sierra carb was not working, the spring was rooted. I took a spare spring/cog/bracket off another carb and put it on my carb, but now when the car is warm, my idle is around 2k, it is usually about 800rpm. Until the car gets warm, it idles at around 1200rpm. I have obviously put the cog in the wrong spot, so how do I install it correctly? It fits to the mechanism with teeth along it's edge. I have not adjusted anything, I only replaced the o-ring under the carb, and cleaned it out with carb cleaner. I think the carb could do with a service, but until then I need it running as well as possible. |

Hope im not being a bonehead, but, is there anyone near you with a similar model, even close. I have done a few engine exchanges by having no knowledge, but, the bonnet up on the same, or similar model to sus out where things go. Red blocks mostly, very simple, lol, bit like zooks. |

wait until the engine is cold, loosen the two screws that hold the cog thing in place, then move the cog assembly(technical term) until the choke butterfly is approx 2mm from being totally closed. if you can't get the gap with just loosening the screws and moving the cog assembly, remove the screws and move the cog one tooth at a time around until you can get the choke butterfly to the correct position. ensure the spring on the cog assembly is properly engaging the choke lever and then re-fit screws and tighten... should only take a few minutes to set it up right.. |

How tight is the spring meant to be? THe old one was rooted, this one is a little firmer, but the butterfly can still flop around a bit... Anyway I adjusted it, hope it helps (it wasn't far off 2mm though before though). Would this affect the idle speed? I know fuck all about carbs, I still believe there is black magic at play in them... |

If the original wasn't in the right spot, then the idle may have been adjusted accordingly... Now you've got the choke adjusted, start her up and let her warm up til the choke is fully open, then stick a screwdriver on the idle screw and turn her down to the right idle... |

Ok, just went for a drive, and it idles perfectly at about 1050rpm. Thanks fellas. |
