Hey all

I'll be due for new rubber at the end of the year (well, i'll want new rubber).

Anyways - I'm engineered and geared to run 31x10.5r15 - however i do like that my current tyres, Simex Pedes, measure around 32x10.0....

What im not happy with is the simex's grip on rock, they love kicking out sideways and putting me on bad angles!

I do however LOVE their grip in mud/clay.

So, i was considering running a 32x9.5 swamper TSL bias:

as they look to have the same style sidebiters as the simex, but more tread in the middle to stop me slipping sideways!

However, obviously i'm concerned on the rock abilities. The hard part is, in winter here its slushy clay everywhere followed by wet rocks or rocks over clay... but in summer the clay hardens right up and the rocks loosen which gives stuff all traction to a mud tyre!

What's everyones thoughts? Oh, and i dont want to run 2 sets - thats not only too expensive, i'm too lazy to swap them over =)

Popular request in my line of work, a tyre that can do everything? :D

Unfourtunately there is always a compromise between patterns. You can get a good mud tyre that is crap on rock or a rock tyre that is crap in mud, or you can get a tyre that is equally crap in both.

My mate was running Federal Couragia M/T's on his 80 series and they performed very well on both mud and rocks, where we live we have a great contrast in conditions from summer to winter. Check out this link:

i dont mind it, but the tread depth is a little light on.

fatzook - i can borrow a tyre re-groover... but im unsure about the siping as to which direction and placement etc without weakening the tread blocks. any ideas?

I dont mind Trepadores, but i've heard bad things about them tramlining, and theyre a little more closed up that i'd ideally like:

siping is usually only done to the centre tread blocks. Just use a stanley knife and make a 5mm deep cut across the blocks every 10mm. Don't go too close to the leading and trailing edges of the blocks as this may cause chunking.

It will take a while to do.

I don't see any benifit in using a re-groover, as creating open grooves will not allow any extra movement of the block over the stanley knife method, but it does create more leading and trailing edges for wear and chunking to occur. Its also another place for small stones to get caught.

i have couragias and think they go really well on everything had them on sand, clay, mud , roks. there cheaper then the treps but in saying that i really like the treps and have seen them in action on a fair few sierras.

i run treps in a 235x75 R15 and have been very happy with them. They are more of a rock tyre but they do clear out mud very well. There only fault is a lack of decent side wall tread in the radial sizes.

That one was punched quite a bit in the face during the siping process. Hence its colour :D

what percentage of tread is on that TSL? Doesnt look brand new? Or is it?
