| Post subject: | How to improve a H20A? |
I've started putting my 95 H20A LWB back together (after 2 years), I'm torn between keeping it and selling it, the biggest thing that turns me of is that my previous Vitara was a G16B LWB it got 10l/100 and was more fun to drive, the H20A returns 13.5, both manuals, both fitted with 2" lift, 235's and an alloy bar. The H20A on paper produces more power and torque at similar revs, but in reality although the V6 runs smooth, seat of the pants paints the 1.6 as the nicer engine, the V6 needs to be revved hard to see results. Paid a lot to Suzuki dealer just before breaking rear axle /diff to service and tune, with no results, in other words I paid a weeks pay for some bloke to change my oil. I work with a lady who drives a V6 Auto and she gets 9.5. I'm looking for solutions as I would like to keep the vehicle but not if my 80 series and surf return better economy. Maybe I should sell the H20A and put in a diesel. The exhaust looks restrictive, is it worth upgrading? Will H25A Extractors fit up as I can't find listings for the H20A? Any ideas? |

To be honest my J20a feels the same way. It too returns 12L/100, but you have to rev it pretty hard to get anywhere. I have change one of the coilpacks which made a slight difference to power. I want to try exhaust, but I doubt that will help economy much. I'm running 225/75's and it feels as though the gears are too tall now, so I will probably end up with some 5.12's from a SWB 1.6 to fix the gearing. Perhaps you could try that? And that sucks about extractors. If anyone has a standard manifold set laying around I could probably knock up some extractors. I know Tombutt wants some for his SV620 aswell. Pete |

throw in a high flow cat & high flow exhaust, it did make a slight improvement on my J20A vitara... plus it sounds a lot cooler running around town my SWB with 31's & 5.12:1 diff ratio's using a fair bit of throttle i get 13.5L/100 |

Any ideas? 235 Tyres, on what is basically a Vitara, seem a bit big to me, i only had 215's on my Vit... did your GV come standard with 235's ? I have a Manual GV with a 2.5L V6, and it gets great economy from my calcs, i get about 9 to 10L per 100kms... it sounds to me like you have a dirty fuel system... and probably half clogged injectors... when was the last time the plugs were changed ? I only run my GV on Premium Unleaded, and i put fuel system/injector cleaner in the tank every third refill, to keep it running well... Sounds to me like that Suzuki Dealer didnt really do to much, or didnt know what they were doing... all standard exhausts are restrictive, for a reason, to give a wider power band over a wider RPM range... a sports system will give you more power at higher RPM's, and will make the engine run better, but not to the extent of dropping your economy that much... your engine is out of whack some where to be using that much fuel, and have so little power... maybe someone here in AZ knows a Zook mechanic who is actually good at what they do, or an AZ member knows/can help you find the reason why its running sick... |

Yeah, its the Vitara that Suzuki added more air to before they made the Vitara more kiddy safe by taking the sharp corners off. Its had new plugs, leads, filter and an off the shelf fuel cleaner, 235's are not standard, but give good diff clearance with out lifting any eye brows, they fit with a 40mm lift and still allow good flex and offer less rolling resistance than a 9.5 or 10.5 width 30 or 31. Besides I couldn't get the 15" ROH steelies from my 1.6L over the V6's brakes and the range of mud tyres under 235's in 16"'s was at the time I fitted these non existent and It gets a bit soft around here when rains so since getting rid of my first set of A/T's I've always run mud tyres. I've got the gear box out at the moment, (replaced noisy center bearing on lay shaft) I noticed that the where the manifolds merge and then join into main exhaust there appears to be a lot of restriction. |

I have one word it's starts with s no it's not smoke my car had stopped that it's snorkel it helped mine a fair bit in fuel economy next is hi flow cat muffler and props 2.5 pipe one day I'll get some extractors made but now for now. I went with 5.12's one 225's and if ur not doing much highway driving they helped a tad then agin I don't really drive causiously so I put fuel in my car alot usally 2 tanks minium a week but would never get a 1.6 upgrading to the 2.5l may be a option I dunno |

Yeah the exhaust and snorkel mod was the direction I was heading, I suppose I was hopping for some one who had been there done that, could prove to the wife the money was worth it kind of think. May have to start looking for 5.12 gear sets. |

I wanna supercharge a h25 with the eaton m45 or m62 but may end up just putting one on the h20 just to see how that goes and if it's enough for me |

Just do the 2.0. Its gonna be easier to get it past QT. ( and I use the word easy, quite loosely 2.5 and supercharger will be outside the engine upgrade sizing hooplar, so it will be a hard sell. |

Mate give me time and I will have I'll try work out some figures once my car is back on the ground I'd highly recommend gears made the car much better off road aswell |

I've noticed that threads get very random very quickly round here. I think I'll leave the charger idea alone for now, I'll look at exhaust and snorkel or maybe (don't burn me at stake) put in a diesel. |

Don't worry mate. We're all a bunch of trash talking larakins around here. Diesel swap after ratio swap. See how that goes. |

The auto hubs on a vitara, do they actually disconnect or not, I've had a glance under the car and can not see a disconnect mechanism, I'm wondering if changing auto hubs for manual hubs would increase economy. |

the auto hub unlocking mechanism is within the little "hub cap" part on the hub of your front wheels. you should hear them unlock when reversing a few feet in 2wd after being in 4wd. |

Get rid of them and put some manual hubs from a 1.6 vitara on it. They are everywhere and at least then when you are locked, you know you are locked. Steve. |

Steve. yep, that's why my auto unlockers aren't fitted to my vitara... it just didn't seem like i was going 4wding if i didn't have to get out & "lock the hubs" |
