My zook must have had a hell of a life at the hands of the previous owner, it's been job after job just to get it looking like a tidy stocker again.

One of the last jobs before I start priming up panels is to fix the gaps around the flare guards - not one flare on my car is a snug fit with the wheel arch, they've all got 1 - 2mm gaps somewhere along the welting.










I think it'd be silly to respray and not fix these gaps up, but not sure if i'm biting off more than I can chew. I'm yet to pull the guards off and see how they attach to the wheel arch... maybe I can do that later this arvo.

Rather than new welting can I caulk up these gaps?


Also - i've been told left front / right rear guards are the same, so too right front / left rear. Has anyone ever put them on the wrong guard? Just wondering if that's what's causing this gap, as there's no obvious panel damage causing it

don't worry about it, it's a sierra, and every sierra has gaps from factory.... most come with optional panel gaps, they call it rust...

You could try lossening the bolts and pushing the flare then re tensioning it. If your painting green you won want those flare rubbers anyway as they are white rubber

I'm thinking of using sikaflex instead of the flare rubbers / welting - this'd do the job, wouldn't it?

you really want to paint the car with the frares off the vehicle as the paint will bridge other wise and flake around there later.
the other reason is that you get to clean under the flare and reseal and color that area with new paint.
the wadding/fill strip is not supposed to be painted as its the flexable component of the joint it will always crack and peal eventually if painted.
I would not sika the flare gaps as it will cause you other problems later if you bash or want to remove the flare.
