Post subject:  Frong Wheel Bearings, Swivel Hub Seals and Kingpins

Hey Guys

Just had the piglet in at the mechanics for a full look over. Got a 'to-do' list back from them and it includes 'need to replace: front wheel bearings, swivel hub seals, kigpins..'

Was wondering how difficult this would be to do myself - dont have a huge amount of experience but happy to give it a shot - its for a 91 sierra swb

I found this kit on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT - is it what i need? If so i am going to save a packet 9is there anything else I will need?) Funds are tight at the moment and splashing $400 labour = $200+ for parts through the mechanic is not a pretty option.

Any help with do's and dont's would be much appreciated

cheers

My guess is that kit would be imported from a maruti parts supplier in India to the Suzuki Specialist. Only concern would be that the bearings may be Indian produced. From all reports the Indian bearing manufacturers aren't up to spec with any of the Japanese bearings like Timken, Koyo etc. Zooks are a light vehicle so its possible the bearings may get you by for a number of years of solid service though.

In saying that there are probably a million marutis flying around india that are running on these bearings with no problems and little to no maintenance, so they might be tough as nails! who knows!

I recently did my front wheel bearings and paid around $50 for a pair of japanese bearings.

Thanks Dank - hadnt thought about them possibly being indian made!!

How much work was involved with you doing the bearings? How many hours did it take?

cheers

i think weaves might be able to put a kit together as he's in the bearing game... maybe smash him a PM.

basic hand tools are needed. Only tricky thing is the hub nuts, which are 50-51mm, so if you don't have a pipe socket, then you will have to use a chisel and hammer to loosen/ tighten. Otherwise you just need a good quality multi purpose grease for the CV, knuckle housing, and a good quality high temp bearing grease for king pins and wheel bearings. I use marine grade greases wherever I can as they resist water and moisture a bit better than others.

Just remember to clean every part thoroughly before re-assembly.

Including cleaning and re-assembly It takes me about 1hr 45 per side. so you should be able to do it in one day.

when you say pair, do you mean a side? because if you pay $50 for two sides that cheaper than i pay from the manufacturer.

you need a spring scale to do it correctly as well, if you get hold of the factory manual it details how to do it very well

I never bother with the scale. I have power steer so it doesn't matter how tight the king pins are 8O :P :D

Yep well Casper has power steer as well now. Fringin love it, but I think I would still use the scales when I need to redo them.

you would be amazed at how wide a scale of 'yeah that feels right' there is when setting them up without the scale, I did mine once and they lasted years, if you arent getting 60000km plus even with 31's you are doing it wrong.

maybe if you set the bearings properly they would last longer than that :)

As Fatzook said about 2 hours a side to do them properly. A hub nut or pipe socket in 50mm is the best way to do the hub nuts up to spec. from memory, the inner nut needs to be tensioned up to 90Nm then backed off to 10Nm and then the outside nut done up to 90Nm.

if anyone has the manual and would like to share the torque settings that would be great. i've done it as above with no ill effects in about 400km of driving since.
