Hi All
I've recently replaced my head gasket and manifold gaskets as well as a partial rebuild of my carby. My car ran OK for a couple of days and I have retensioned all of the gaskets after a good run. But...
...My car has started to miss and is under powered again. My No.2 spark plug is cleaner than the others (another/new head problem?). On accelleration the engine stutters and only runs right on full boot once the revs are up. On start up the auto choke is not engaging and once warm the engine will idle at 1500 rpm. I was fairly sure that all of the vac hoses went back onto the right but am now questioning myself as the choke seems to be running in reverse. It seems to me in my limited knowledge that the No.2 cylinder isn't firing properly (spark/ignition issue?).
Any advice, help or someone in Tassie that will come and take it away never to be seen again, will be greatly appreciated. Note, this is my daily driver and unfortunately I'm in no position to 'just' go out and buy new carbs or spend lots of cash on a sinking ship. I just need it running right and relaible for a 45 minute drive to and from work every day.
Cheers BenChez

My g16b does this sometimes.. Only briefly when it's cold though. It was doing it all the time until I got new leads and plugs.

i had the same problem! you might want to start checking out your carby, check your spring tension behind the carby, that will help keep the car at lower idle, with the gasket part you should start by checking all your cylinders working while the cars on just take 1 out at a time and see if the engine is losing power when you remove a plug, if youve rebuild your gasket that shouldnt be a problem. maybe start with cylinders and spring tension on your carby.... hope this helps im not a mechanic but i managed to fix the problem myself

if you do need to change spring make sure its heaps tighter and reinforced so it doesnt lose tension quickly

i had a similar problem after i had to change my water pump after everything was put back together.
if the cam belt has come off during your rebuild, which it will have if you've changed your head gasket, your timing may be out.
check that the mark on the cam pulley lines up with the mark on the head and the mark on the other pulley lines up with the mark on the block. the marks are only small and may be difficult to see (a notch in the pulley wheel, or a small line on the head), but they will be there.
be careful when you put your cam belt back on that you don't move them out of alignment again, as only a small bit out can affect your timing.
this won't show up when you run a timing light over your engine either.
hope this helps,
nathan

Auto choke was the problem, the waxwhateveryoucallit is dead and not engaging. Took the spring off the choke today and had the butterfly held open and it ran ok. The bottom cam attached to the throttle cable is sticking somewhere as well and the fast idle is not engaging properly. Got a carb off a 1324cc G13 today and got that on but it wouldn't idle properly either with the choke also sticking a little and the idle quite rough. with a bit of fiddling with the choke tension settings it ran better with no stutter and a bit more go. Took it for a test drive and now my zook is sitting just out of town beside the road as it stelled and now has decided not to start again. The motor was stalling on down changes in gear. So now i'm spent and have no motivation to touch it anymore. I'll bring it home this evening and see where we go from there. Anyone want to swap a dead sierra for a V6 Navara?
