Post subject:  Installing ODA Control Arm Skid plate's ?
Hi Guys
Just got some Skid plates for the Jimny from ODA, and want to install them myself.
Im not to sure how to go about it, or where to jack the car up, to start undoing the bolts. I'm not sure what type of tension is held in the control arm, and what will happen when I eventually unbolt it.

Also what could I use to make it easier to undo the bolts.

i would jack it up from the chassis and take all the weight off the axle. have the wheels a bees dick off the ground.
then do one at a time.
BUT i haven't unbolted the control arms. i'm just guessing by what i know.
it's what i would do anyway.

i wonder if i should get some of these... mine are getting the paint slowly sanded off. . . .

Or the easy way would be to park on level ground hand brake on in gear, and use a big F$%ken spanner to undo the leading and trailing arm bolts at chassis end do one at a time, carefully push bolt out with long thin punch and or screw driver, install guard and put bolt back in you can push the wheels back or forward slightly to line up arm with chassis, I've replaced arms this way on my own its no big deal and no stress on control arm bolts when car is level.

dont jack vehicle up. leave wheels on ground. undo and remove the bolt, the control arm wont drop but may move up a bit. put the skid plate on and if you have trouble getting the bolt back in then put a screwdriver in the other end and lever it until you can slide bolt through. i wouldnt worry bout torque settings, just do up tight.

ok cool thanks guys, I'll have a crack at it, sound easy enough, only thing hard, is how tight they are, probably use a lever on the spanner.

Surely they would come with some kind of fitting instructions that would spell out teh safest way to fit them? mucking around with bits that hold the car up can get messy if you dont take your time and keep your fingers out of places that might squash them

The bolts where way to tight to get off, so I ended up getting a mechanic to do it. I don't have the right tools. :(

Fitted mine today, would have taken about 1 hr all up (should have been a lot less but some persuasion was required on the existing brackets as a couple were pretty messed up.)
Notes.
Tools required 2 x 17mm spanners, 2 x 19mm spanners, old fukd'd large screw driver to line bushes up with brackets. (torque wrench but I am pedantic)
No need to jack car up as it will make the arms drop further when released, but a jack can be handy for raising the lateral arm to line up the bushes with the brackets when putting the new bolts in..

The kit is not just the plates, it comes with 4 x longer bolts, 8 washers, 8 spacers and 2 thinner bolts nuts and washers which I suspect may have a purpose on a later jimny.

During the install I rang Tim re the 2 extra bolts in the kit and he was very helpful.

Be prepared to do some panel beating if your brackets have already been bent over, but otherwise it was an easy job but does require a bit of muscle, having said that I have access to a hoist but did it on the driveway.

Inox is good for fused bolts - especially if you can drown it then leave it overnight as it penetrates. WD40 Ok too, but not as good. Otherwise heat can work (like real heat gun, not just hairdryer) or just grunt - mechanical advantage through an extension arm on the spanner helps.
