well i rang suzistore asking them for a quote on changing my 4spd to a 5 spd.

Its in a maruti so the housing is still the same just need the guts of the 5 spd is all.............the result was $1850.

Well I think the sierra 5sp is a sack of shit. So I now have vitara boxes in all 3 of my zooks now. Bigger clutch, bigger bearings, just beefier all over. And not much work to fit if you already have a 1.6 :wink:

is it whining in all gears ? or only certain gears . i am asking this for a reason ..

Ok. Since the medium term plan is to go 1.6, the shorter term plan is to get the drivetrain up to scratch before trying to pump any more power through it. Since the 'box is leaking out of the rear seal, getting a bit crunchy while selecting 3rd and whines even more than the missus I tihnk its a good place to start. My big question is: what will I actually need. Lowrange offer kits with and without synchros, and then extras such as needle bearings, rear tailshaft bushings and input shafts. Whilst I don't want to waste money, I'd rather get it right whilst the box is out. And I don't wanna drop the box then wait 3 weeks for parts, cos I wanna spend as little time as possible with it off the road. So, suggestions anyone?

From the bit I had to do with them... Best to pull down you box first if you can as the input shaft needle bearings often mark the shaft. You will need synchros and all needle bearings . Most kits don't have the needle bearings. I got a kit from CBS up here in cairns, complete with seals but not synchors. Guy quoted me old price $190 so that was a score.. Still have the boxes with the numbers on em if you need em. You may be able to source em cheaper buying em singular.

Its 880. and its a rip off, so I'll do it myself. Its not my daily so I don't mind a bit of time off the road, but not weeks while I wait for parts having stripped the box already...

I ran a locktup kit through green one ben. It came with syncros but no needle bearings. I ended up doing it without the needle bearings and with the existing shafts. It's not been driven much since but its nice and quiet now and seems like new (well as new as these boxes can feel).

I have a 1300 cc motor that will fit a sierra and jimny and maybe more that i dont know of, brought it for my vitara, did not fit though. $500 o.n.o

WA company) and got the kit sent direct from US cant remember how much though and that was my first solo rebuild, beyond a T5 at tafe

i rebuilt my 5speed a while ago ( 8 mths or so ) i only did the roller bearings and seals tho. i pulled the bearings out and took them to a bearing supplier. got timken bearings less than 90 all up with seals. easy job (with someone elses press)

bit of a gravedig, but does anyone know if replacement gearsets and shafts are available from any aftermarket suppliers? i've alread replaced bearings, syncros and seals but the gears are super whiney as well. i was hoping it would just be the bearings

It whines in all gears (including neutral), whenever there is more load applied the whining becomes louder. when the clutch pedal is depressed the noise disappears. So i think there's definitely a problem in either the input shaft or countershaft set, potentially in the mainshaft set even though this isn't spinning when it's in neutral and the noise is still being made it may contribute to the noises once the car is moving. That's my thoughts at the moment, probably doesn't make a huge amount of sense because it's not very well worded; what were you thinking?

clutch throwout bearing would be the opposite... it would be noisy when the clutch is in. and its not the spigot either, they've both been replaced
