My car is now 80% primed up and i want to sort out a few scratches and light dings that the primer can't fill. What's the rule with putty and bog - can I use it over the top of primer or does it 'have' to go onto bare metal? i'll prime back over the top of any filled up areas... info is a little vague so if anyone can clarify i'll be grateful |

spray putty can go over primer or u could use stop putty its in a tube , its good for little nicks or scraches |

i usually sand the area back to bare metal, as i think it will have a better chance of sticking. but put it on primer and see how it goes |

depending on the type of primer acrylic primer use stop putty two pak primer you can use bog although its not a very good way of doing it as it tends to have air bubbles and other inpurities , the best way is to use a poyester fine fill. be carefull on all acrylics as they shrink and you may see scratches later . also be careful of getting bog wet as it can cause humity blisters later. |

bog is always SUPPOSED to be used over bear metal after being ground off or a least heavily sanded. the grinding/sanding keys it to the panel.bog is a poyester fiberglass resin base with a soft filling agent sort of like polystyene. thats why it sticks well but is easy to sand. |

Can I get stop putty from repco/supercheap? I saw spray putty in a can at repco, but didn't have an eye out for the stop putty stuff. Also - on a similar subject - what sort of Sikaflex to use... there's about 10 different options at Bunnings... surely there's is a 'best' option. Main purpose is to bury the seams in the gutter rails as it was beforeI attacked it with a wire wheel (I stripped the original caulking out so I could vice clamp the gutters straight... worked a treat). |

there is several auto grades of sika but Im a big fan of the general auto and glass(dont remember the number) just get on that has a pic of a car on it and you will be fine |

I have always put bog on primer. Never on bare metal as it doesnt stick proper. Never had a problem (even after 10 years + of driving) Bog on bare metal will look good but tends to peel off. |

yes we have repaired many panel jobs from people that had (had a go) most of them are A) bare metal B) to much bog C) overall stuffed job:P some basic tips for body work would be use as little bog as possible. allow for the bog and or primer to (sink back) before standing. |

Never had a problem (even after 10 years + of driving) Bog on bare metal will look good but tends to peel off. and yet you are total WRONG if you read my post again (yes I know it may seem complicated) body filler (bog) is supposed to go directly onto clean keyed metal. keyed means ground or heavily sanded. now you can tell eveyone to do the wrong thing like you have, or you can learn something. the only filling products that are supposed to go over paint/primers are- polyeseter fine fill (2 pak) stop putty (acrylic) if you still cant fathom this get a can and try reading the back.They put all kinds of fun stuff on the back of cans. |

i have always used bog on bare metal I Use a product called metal plastic which is more of a putty filler and this generally adheres very well to primed surfaces. Most bog and puttys need a polyester putty/filler sprayed over them and then priming after a light sand, to reduce the sinckback effect common when priming straight over bog. |

Will bog melt if it's too hot? My exhaust tip is about 3 inches away from a bit I want to bog on the lower back corner. I'm using the 3M lightweight auto filler bought from Repco, it says nothing on the jar but I think it's a poly-something filler - plastic. Not sure what heat resistance this stuff has. |

hmm, dodgy panel beaters that do dodgy car yard work are the only idiots that put bog on top of any paint, bog is best applied to a clean bare metal surface, laziness can lead to it going on paint also. i reckon we need some pics of all your hard work che_guitarra |

Quick question ajsr, how many years have you been working in the panel beating industry? Probably a few more than skelaaleks... But then some people always think they're right... Che, I know who's advice I'd be following, and who's I'd be ignoring... Bog goes on bare metal. I'm certainly no panel beater but even I know that one (from reading the instructions on the tin )

But I spent 17 years in the trade, 4 of which were managing sections of others shops and 5 years running my own shop I then spent 18 mths as a technical demonstrator for wattyl paints. I gave up the trade when my father got cancer ,to help run his company. these days I have a construction company that builds large commercial green houses and hail netting structures over orchards. cheers andrew |
