Hi guys, I was referred to this site which I didn't even know exsisted until today, hopefully someone can help me with my baby?!

Basically I was driving along the highway and there was this really loud bang which came from the engine. I got the car towed back to my place in brissie and haven't touched it since (three weeks ago). It does still start if its turned on but it's really really rough and doesn't sound healthy at all. I don't know anything about cars being a girl and all but would be grateful for any suggestions etc about what exactly I'm looking at and who could fix it I'm a bit weary of taking it to a garage to get fixed, would prefer a bit of reasonable and trustworthy help!

Nope, no oil or smoke, nothing. Almost done 122000km. She's just sitting in the sun in Taringa, perishing away...I could put her down undercover but I'm scared I'll never manage to get her out of the garage again!

What year?

If its a very late leafy, were they prone to the piston skirt problem some coilys had?


I got some mates that live in Taringa, but they know stuff all about cars One thought cars went forward because of exhaust gas untill I set him straight about 3 years ago

A big bang and clacking sound from the engine can't be good news, It's usually caused by vital components going walkabouts, So just be prepared to hear that it may need a heart transplant.

I can only suggest for you to open the oil cap and see if the oil is a milky white colour, That's a good idication of water mixing with oil which is usually cause by a blown head gasket, it wouldn't really make a loud bang noise as your driving along but it may help to understand whats happening.

I'm sure one of the members in Brisbane are willing to go over and help you out. Just get some cookies ready for them

Well the guy I got it from said he only used it on weekends for a bit of fun, I think he was telling the truth?! It's a 1996. I've never heard/felt a backfire before but I guess it could've been something like that. When I opened the bonnet to listen to it when i turned it on again it sounded like there was something broken in the engine though?

I'd bet its a piston skirt failure, like the coily's are prone too; being such a late model pistons were probably made in the same batch as coilys. It's no fault of the vehicle's owner/s, it's a manufacturing defect.
If my guesstimate is right, your looking at a rebuild or replacement engine


What would be the best way to check that? I would think remove the sump?
Not sure if a compression test would say much?

If it was just a backfire it wouldn't sound broken when you try to run it now.

If it sounds like something is broken in the engine then it probably is. Which means either rebuild or replace. Or upgrade

Coily = Coil spring suspention = Late 96+ sierra's, They have a different motor and suspention setup compared to the earlier versions, I think Highway Star was tring to determine what engine you have in it by the type of suspension it has.

It seems like your's is the last of the early model, Leaf spring suspension aka Leafy Sierra. Because they changed over in '96, your's might use some engine parts from the late model sierra which were found to be of shitter quality.

I hope that kinda makes sense.

Late type leaf sprung Sierra (what yours appears to be)


Coil sprung Sierra.


The Coil sprung Sierra was the next model after the leaf sprung models. It looks a bit more "bling", but also has a very different suspension type.

They both run the same type of motor (A Suzuki G13), but Suzuki produced a batch of engine pistons (a critical component in most engine types) which were prone to breaking apart. Generally this batch of pistons made it into the coil sprung model (coily), but yours being such a late model leaf sprung vehicle, I'm guessing yours may essentially have a coil sprung model engine. The coil sprung models also had a different timing belt. I know someone with a late 1995 leaf sprung Sierra who's engine and gearbox are essentially the coil model type.

G13 engines can be had cheap, and you probably only need the bottom end. The rest of that model engine is fine, and not prone to failure. I actually had a coily top end on my leafy engine for a few years before I sold the motor.
Problem is finding a good motor that doesn't smoke like Winston Churchill


Anyway, my ramblings are all well and good, but my idea would need to be verified (likely by partial disassembly of the engine) before you go buying stuff.

piston skirt would almost certainly lead to hole on block and oil and smoke everywhere, plus letting go on the highway would lead to a lot crazier description than a bang and pulling over, there would be fire and brimstone and all sorts of stuff going on!!!
