To be honest mate, i dont even think suzuki knew what the were doing as the have been so many variations in all forms of the utes, in regards to engines, diff ratios, wt or nt, the list goes on. However if you go to outerlimits4x4 theres a maruti thread in the sierra bible with a load of info on them, it also confirms what I just said. Might help you out on your quest for info. |

Ute, as in tray back.. Not ute as in Soft Top LWB lol I have a set of WT diffs with spring pads to suit NT spring setup.. So that is no problem |

Well, for starters, the Tray Back Utes were only ever a Long Wheel Base (2375mm), never came in a SWB (except if you count an NZ Jimny Flatdeck!) The name "Stockman" was only used on the LJ80 or 81 (not restricted to a Ute), or on a Maruti. Not applied to 1.0 or 1.3 tray backs. LJ81K Ute with factory tray, 797cc F8A 1977-80 LJ81P Cab/Chassis with factory taillights 1977-80 SJ40T Ute 970cc F10A (SJ410K with tray, SJ410P Cab/Chass), NT, JA spec 1980-85 SJ51T Ute 1324cc G13A NT, JA Spec 1984-87 QB Drover Ute, same as SJ51T above 1324cc G13A NT 1985-87 MG410 Maruti LWB cut-down 970cc F10A, NT 1988-1992 MG410WT Maruti LWB cut down 970cc F10A, WT 1992-1996 "Stockman" JA Spec means base model (plain seats, no tacho, no wheel arch flares, 6.00-16 Bar tread tyres (FR78-15 Opt)) |

Thanks 303zuke, you saved me a long post. A couple of things I want to re-enforce: There is no such thing as a factory wide track Sierra tray back ute. The Maruti's that are tray backs started life as a LWB and were cut down into tray backs here in Australia, the stockman sticker on them was not factory it was done to differentiate a tray back from a LWB for sales purposes. I wish they had never put those Stockman stickers on a Maruti, the only real Stockman is the LJ80/81 Stockman. |

Mine's an SJ40T - 1983. Came as a NT, LWB, 1L. Although most of that changed after I started with it. In fact, the only standard bits left on it are the driver's door and front grill... The rest has been swapped over to newer 1.3/WT bits - WT diffs, 1.3L donk/gearbox/transfer, boosted brakes, 1.3L bonnet, front and rear shock mounts moved/changed, WT dash & interior, etc etc etc. The traybacks seem to be gaining popularity once again, but buggered if I know why? |

Can't argue with that. Although an extra/king-cab would be great for being able to take stuff with you when you drive them.. |

Gave dig! What was the largest factory tyre to come out on a ute?? All I can find is 205/15 but I thought there was something else (larger) on the early utes? |

Yes my 82, 1L ute came from factory with 16 inch rims. 205/16's are larger than other sierra's. They are actually around 29.5" tall, slightly larger than 235/75R15's I believe. |

So the next thing I have to do is 1/ Find evidence of this 2/ Try and find evidence of this happening in SJ51 (hopefully but I doubt it!) |

Wouldn't be 205/16. The 16 inch wheels (available on the Utes and JA spec soft-tops) came out only with 6.00-16 Bar treads, or FR78-15 tyres on 15 inch rims for the 1.3 and Maruti. Both the 15 and 16 inch rims were similar styled "big-5 spoke" wheel. Sunraysia style 15" were only available on the JX SWB and LWB, which both used the FR78-15 as standard size. Widetrack Sierras introduced the 205/70-15 as the new standard tyre with the 3.7 diff as a lower profile tyre to reduce overall height to overcome the "Consumer report" rollover problem. |

2strocker, it was'nt done to differenciate a tray back from a lwb, as tray back maruti's are lwb.ie there are no swb maruti's. my well body maruti had the stockman sticker also |

No Maruti came into Australia with a Stockman sticker on it. Yes all Maruti's were LWB what I meant was to differentiate between a cut down tray back ute and a standard style side Maruti. Because Suzuki had discontinued its tray back ute and they were still sought after by many rural people, in an effort to pick up those sales some Maruti's were chopped down to make them into traybacks, this was done for the dealer by a Brisbane based company, after they were chopped a Stockman Sticker which was also locally made was put on them by the dealer and they were advertised as a Stockman tray back ute. I remember this because at the time a mate of mine who had a panel shop at Alderley had grand ideas of buying all the chopped off backs and making them into Suzuki trailers but it never happened for him. I will get the name of the company that cut them down and post it up for your interest. If yours has Stockman stickers and it is still a style side then I would say someone other than the dealer put them on it, replica stickers are available on EBAY for $35 and a number of Suzuki's on this site wear them. |
