my shitbox has developed a bit of an issue. the first time it happened was around 2 months ago and worked fine up untill yesterday. turn the key to on and all the dash lights come on, turn to start and then nothing. no click, just nothing. then the dash lights wont come on. after a bit of jiggling fuses and just poking bits the dash lights will come on and it may start but the cycle may start again. i have found a melted fuse for the thermo fan, not blown but the plastic is actually melted. i rewired with new fuse holder and relay. also the relay for the driving lights was hot to touch so i have removed all the driving light wiring. no difference. so i disconnected every accessory including the second battery. no difference. disconnected the starter motor and now the dash lights work reliably. starter motor works fine if i use a wire straight from battery to the starter solenoid. will wiring a relay in like a clicky starter fix do the job even though the starter has never had the clicky problem? what the fuck is going on? |

Check and clean all earths.. And as AJSR said check your commectioms on the battery + as well A relay wouldnt be a bad idea... you may not have the clicky problem yet but your working with wiring that is over 20 years old.. So its just a matter of time |

Main earth cactus ? The negative side of things is a very overlooked creature. Low drain, no need for any form of big wiring, but, when the starter is hit, huge drain, I replace all my negative lines with far far bigger wiring. All thoughts seem to run to positive, but without a same or bigger return, its fukd. |

So does a 30 Amp fuse work well with a 100 or 110 Amp Alt, or are you forever replacing the fuse? |

come on somebody has to ask how my motor was earthing with one earth burnt out and the other broken. i think it was through my awesome exhaust mount.

I fitted a thicker starter battery cable from alt to Batt as well. The orginal cable from the alt to the batt kept blowin the 30 amp fuse though but when I added the thicker one it stopped blowin. |

i had a strange one not long ago.. no fuel pump, no driving lights, no thermo.. every thing elce was fine... turned out chassis wasnt earthed... no idea how it earthed b4 but one day what ever was earthing it... well stopped. |

Yea ok, true, but if you look at all the stock electrical set ups, all are earthed back to the battery. I used a piece of 300amp welding lead to earth the body from the battery, no more gremlins. |

Sierras have a multitude of loom earth points onto teh body and most notably the dash support bar!!! |

Royce, the only earth point I had on suziblu, that was 100% bog stock when I got her was a thin wire, can't remember, about 2mm from negative to the body just next to the terminal. This melted and caused funny things to happen. It was you that answered the problem, I had added spottys and a thermo, both earthed to the body, ( i recon as this caused the melting of the earth line), I have since researched a bit, and changed the negative sides to the battery and also the very heavy duty earth strap. Dunno if you can remember, one of the things happening was when I turned high beam on, the temp gauge would instantaneously rise to the top of the marks. Seems to be fine now. |

This clicky starter problem everyone is talking about. i totally have that! is there a noobcad diagram of where to put this relay and the type of relay to use? i've searched but on these work computers, its dialup speed and nothings working out for me. ps... unless its a headdeck, amp and subz.. i don't make a habbit of touching wires... i have set cars alight trying to do simple things before. So if it looks even remotely difficult i will have to get someone else to do it. weaves |
