Post subject:  Early 4cyl GV Diff Ratios in Auto & Manuals....

I've been trying to find out what the Diff Ratios would be on the "early 4cyl model MAN & AUTO" GV's up to about '02 or there abouts....
Is there a difference between the MANUAL and AUTO 4cyl versions??

So far I've found the following:

4.625:1 for 2.0ltr MANUAL (I assume this is for the 4cyl motor)
4.88:1 for 2.0ltr AUTO (I assume this is for the 4cyl motor)

Can anyone in the know confirm if this is right....?

plus..... When did they start bringing out the STEEL Diff's in the Front + I believe the AUTO model's can have Reduction Gears installed where as the MANUALS cannot.... is that right??

I have in my 99 GV 5.125:1 front and rear diffs out of a short wheel base soft top Grand Vitara cant remember the year but definitely out of a GV.

The front had the ADD diff in alloy housing which i installed into my steel housing.

The rear was a direct fit but the housing looked different as it had strengthening ribs around the pinion area due to the smaller pinion (no ball pivot mount as it is from a GV.

I didn't think any GV's came with 5.12's..... was it only in SWB's

It was a SWB GV i think it was 1.6 manual but cant be sure.

I don't know the year but the vin of the wreck was JSAFTA03V00201329.

Like i said the rear diff carrier is the GV style without the upper control arm mount and the casting is vastly different to the 4.3:1 carrier it replaced with extra ribbing running from the pinion area towards the mounting flange.

really, i didn't think that was a factory ratio for the GV?

I know experament-u2 put 5.12:1 vitara diffs in his 1.6 GV soft top

Yep 41 x 8 (5.125:1) out of a GV......

Unless they were not aboriginal to that vehicle but the rear carrier is a non control arm mount type and the R&P definitely belong in the carrier as there is a sticker on it with model number and "41M" just as the 4.3:1 carrier I removed has the same sticker but with "43M".

Yes it was the air disconnect type with alloy housing that but i swapped the R&P into my steel GV housing.

It seems like the 4cyl (2.0ltr) MANUAL GV's are the only ones that have the ability for Reduction Gears..... according to the Calmini Site.....
