Hi all

Found this now on ebay and just asking

Yes, they are rare.

In the late '90's a mate priced one from a suzuki dealer - $800.

I don't think there's any point in running one except for giggles.

Only time an inclinometer would be any good would be recording at what angle you roll at...

NOTE: you would have to roll first to find this out ;)

Usually around the time your sphincter tightens up... or just after you shit yourself. All depends how often you get it to that point and how quick your "clench" reflexes are :D

my experience with rolling cars is that a slight fraction of a second after ya hit
a tree ya face smashes the steering wheel and when ya come to you are
sitting on grass while still sitting in ya car.
that was when i learned to always wear a seat belt. :wink:

They're not even good for that either. They only give an accurate-ish reading when standing still. When the car is rocking about, they wave about madly and don't really show a particular reading. Then, the roll over angle of your car also varies depending if it's static or dynamic roll-over, ie static is very slow rock crawling when the car is inclined to a point where the Centre of Gravity is above a point outside the tyre's contact on the ground, while dynamic is driving fast around a corner and centrifugal force places the CoG outside the tyres. In either case, the inclinometer will be of little use.

IF HOWEVER, you still want an inclinometer, the exact same Original Accessory ones were also used in early Mitsubishi Pajeros and Tritons and could probably be bought from a Mitsi wrecker for much less.

I think you should buy it, your car will be so much more capable when off road with one fitted.

Between one of these puppies, two hiclones and a set of wacky shackles you'll be able to drive over RTI ramps and through the 5th layer of gravity.

there is five layers of gravity shit i didnt know that. surly you would need a kilo of super unobtanium to do that.

I spent some time a while ago driving on the side on an embankment just to get a feel for where the tipping point was, got it to the point I could lift the top wheels of the ground with two hands and said

You could feel the suspension on the top unloading just at that point.

I used to have an inclimeter in my 1L. I didnt know it was rare.
It had two separate dials, each with line drawings of the car from front and side. it was cool.

There are sometimes wreckers of light aircraft around. you could pull an artificial horizon out of the instrument panel. every airplane has one so if you could find one it probably would not be to expensive.

I'm on the look out for one myself so if I find a place ill post it up.

They're a gyroscopic instrument that in all honesty probably wouldnt suit a 4WD application, let alone the ride in a zook. These's a whole range of reasons why I wouldn't use one but I'll list a few

-Power supply, aircraft will typically run 400hz 115v ac power, or 26v dc power, not 12-14v rectified dc. (my experience is more with large aircraft so bug smashers may run a suitable power supply but the bigger issues are to follow)
-They are fragile, a bump exceeding 2g can destroy the tiny jewel bearings. This is the equivalent of dropping it on something hard from 2cm height. This is more of an issue when the gyro isn't up to speed but they're fragile none the less.
-They must be fully run up/down before you can move them, else you risk the gyro 'toppling' and smashing itself to death, a bit like the youtube video of someone putting a brick in a washing machine - if you've seen it :). Run up would be a matter of minutes, run down can take 20 or more because of the awesome bearings and the fact that its a gyroscope = rotating balanced mass.
-Gyro's will spin up and be aligned to an imaginary point in space, and an axis aligned to your vehicle (assuming it has a cage function) as opposed to referencing gravity. Therefore if your car is not level when its spun up, it will not indicate accurately. In essence an inclinometer is a weighted scale that rotates around an axis ideally aligned with the longitudinal axis of your vehicle (for roll) and lateral axis for roll.

I'm not trying to shoot you down mate, I'd just hate to see you spend a decent amount of cash on an aircraft instrument, then buy/make a power supply and mount, only to find it doesnt do what you expected.

Aircraft parts are EXPENSIVE!! I've had 6 years as an avionics tech and can tell you I see plenty of parts that you'd swear could be bought at dick smith's. When they arrive the paperwork from manufacturer's or repairers always have a couple extra 0's on the price tag. Not because its always a better standard of product, but because the product testing and quality assurance needed to qualify it as an aircraft part makes the whole process outrageously expensive.

My 2c.
