Hi guys.
Car is a 98 sierra.
I have this whining noise coming from the engine. I thought it might have been the air con compressor, because i just had a mate regas it before we went to kakadu last weekend. It was the only thing that has been touched recently.
So i took the belt that drives the compressor off and fired it up. Same result :x .
Then i took off the fan belt and gave it another shot, this time no noise. :)
Problem now is that i don't know if it is the water pump or alternator. Tried spinning each of them by hand but i can't really tell.
Has anyone had this problem? or is there something else i can do to rule out one or the other?

If its a bit like a squealing whine, then i would say water pump... try spraying some CRC or WD40 around the centre of the fan and Alt to see if that stops the noise, do one first, then try the other... but i would think it is water pump... :D

Have you checked to see if someone's wife is stuck under your bonnet?

Does it have power steering? if it does could be low on fluid.

Have you checked them for play? Not just spinning them?

Stethewhateverscope hey
I saw a mechanic put a long flatblade screwdriver onto areas of the engine once, with the handle to his ear
It seemed to work, and was amusing to see
