Post subject:  Considering auto conversion.
Im thinking of replacing my tired 1.3L with something a little more powerful and auto to suit. Any ideas of motor/autobox combos that dont require much mods to suit?

Probably the best coversion avaliable
If i were ever to go Auto, it would have to be a sequential shift box.. 6 speed
No way the ZF box out of a Territory would fit, but i'd find something

The trimatic is an easier fit but it's much harder to gear unless you run enormous tyres.

What does that mean Jccck? (not 6 speed, sequential) Aren't all auto's sequential?

Do you mean a "tiptronic" or "tapshift" box (so once in "D" you can push or pull the next gear?) If so, that's really just a function of the shifter and electronic control. It's pretty easily achieved with an AW-4.

Tangent:

Are you aware that the obsession with more gear ratios is all about emissions? The idea is to keep the engine in the smallest operating rev range possible (around peak torque) at all times. The most dramatic example of this I've experienced was a V10 TDI Touareg. Under a full power acceleration run, revs did not fluctuate more than 500rpm at any time - from launch. Revs sat at about 2000rpm +/- 250rpm and it just shuffled gears. It's effective, but terribly dull and goes against everything I think driving is about. Where emissions and fuel economy aren't a significant concern, I can't see the point in multi ratio autos. IMHO, it's complication for the sake of it.

I know bugger all about autos, i know how a Torque Converter works and thats about it.
So get off my case haha

I'm aware of that, but it always feels more fun to have more gears.
And i meant tiptronic.

A sequential shift auto is simply a box that has a manual shift, but you simply push the shifter forward to change up, then it centres itself ready for you to push it forward to select the next gear. (so no H pattern, no stupid sports shift dog leg crap, just forward and backward)

Think of a WRC car.

No way you could fit one in a sierra, and even then, they start at $30K and usually have air shift, so they are VERY complex.

AW4 is all but bulletproof, and all the auto a sierra needs. :wink:
