Post subject:  Lets talk tyres
Ok so the coily is almost back on the road (for now :lol: ) and I am looking at upgrading my rubber.Now before anyone says use the search button.....read :roll: and then tell me that!

Few questions...Preferably from guys with experience,and guys with coilys(haha I said it!!) but advice on the topic is welcome...


Ok my rig..turbo gti coily,2inch body and suspension lift,Virtual lift with TJ jeep flares...I will be looking at running 6.5's in a wt case.

1.What size tyres are you coily guys running,and are you happy with them(ie would you go bigger/smaller)?
2.What rims/offset are you running?
3.Will the coily diffs handle 32/33's?if not why?
4.I was looking at maxxis bighorns or bf goodridge m/t,any other alternatives you guys are running?

And lastly has anyone done the wt diffs into coily for the sake of airlockers ect.(and is there a 3.9 center available for them or would I just go lower?) Sorry don't know much about diff ratios.

but either of those tyres are top tyres, the maxxis are a fair bit cheaper

you need to tell us more specifically the terrain you drive and what percentages of each.

as for size, stick with 31's for reliability IMO.

I'm yet to see a Maxiss off a rim, what are the side wall's like?
Do the bead's seat tight?? Or are thay like other cheap tyre's & fall on??

Ive had both and I'm running the km2 bfg at the moment, but I'd say the maxxis is a slightly better offroad tyre all round and great on road.
the bfg is exellent on road and great off road, the maxxis is better in the goop. bfg is a little quiter than the maxxis.
both wear very well for muddies I got 70km from the bighorns and will get something similar from the bfg's i guess.

both are a top tyre but I'd lean toward the bighorn just for the $200-$300 a set difference.

i drive a coily, 2 inch suspension and 2 inch body lift. Its my daily driver and i do mostly rocky, gravel and sand off road driving. i run 30 inch kumhos kl71s and i think they are a great tyre. plenty of grip on road in wet and dry, awesome off road in most conditions..im yet to see how they wear but so far they have been really good. i have 15 x 7 -13 offset sunnys.

I dont know about the more consumer type sizes but teh 37" comp compound trepadors are fucking heavy and fucking hard to get on a rim when its 4 degrees and need that much air to seat you start to think about backing away slowly :)

ive had nothing but goodyears for 4wd tyres but might consider them next time round

cheers guys...sooo leaning towards the maxxis..my brother in law runs them,and it made a huge difference in the mud/rock...I will be running over,mud,rock,sand,everything really...

Anyone else recommend the 31's for reliability?

I would not go any bigger then 31s on coily diffs.

1. You can not get chromo axles and cvs, for the coilys.
2. Spare parts for the diffs are hard to find
3. They are expensive if you do find them.
4. Even more expensive if you buy new.

I can run a full size 31" with my gearing, 4.9s and 3.9 diffs.
You will want to reinforce your radial arm mounts on the diff, they have a habit of tearing off when you add a locker and gears :wink:

It would just be shit loads easier to run 30's and not have a problem. Screw converting the front diff over to run an extra inch of rubber. Maybe if you were going to run some 33's or bigger 8)

my choice is 31x10.50 baja claws on a 15x8 offset 22.

I agree, claws are shit and maxxis is the shit. my buckshots are a hell of a lot better than the claws that I tried. The claws were new and had less traction than my buckshots do.

Mate I'm running 29's and no lockers or gearing and I still need to beef up the mounts.

Unique go through Fatzook and he should get you some 5mm brackets cut up for your coily before you go wacking on some big rubbers. Otherwise you might lose a diff somewhere on the tracks :P

IMO no. It would be a huge amount of work for not a lot of gain. Stick with 30s / 31s and add a rear locker and gears.

lockie, it depend on how you drive and there condition e.g. rust, age etc. The mounts are only made from 2mm sheet with a weak design :roll: The front mounts are much stronger

no im not 12. and been driving alot longer then 5 mins, plus working at a 4wd shop i get to here alot of feed back on different tires mate.
and every body is entitled to the opinion.
but mine is claws so get over it

You are entitled to your opinion.

But you are in the minority :wink:

Claws may be perfect for your chosen driving style and terrain, but most with sierras and vits will find them to be less effective than other makes of tyre.

im running NEXEN Roadian MT on 15x8 Mega Offset rims and Cant fault them at all they r 31x10.5x15s

Definitely more of an all-rounder than either of the 2 mentioned. By reviews i've read online theyre deceivingly good in mud and great on everything else.

My experience with 31" Maxxis Trepadors on a coily:

-13 offset (or deeper) with only 40mm spring lift and 2" BL results in tyres fouling with the edge of wheel arches at full flex. The Coily axles are longer then WT so a smaller offset will see a nice improvement in track width.

The radial (not the comp ones are bias ply) Trepadors have a really light sidewall IMO. With inner tubes and 6PSI I was very impressed with how flexible they are. I don't have other tyres cut open to compare the sidewall to, but I put a 3" slash in the sidewall of one of mine after only 2 hours total driving. Maybe I was unlucky?

I need some new tyres on my daily drive soon and I am considering the smaller trepadors if I can get them. I am impressed with their on-road abilities - mainly in the wet as they actually seem to have pretty good tread siping and they stop much better then other MTs I have driven on.

I have broken 2 CVs in my coily - one on 29s (being a bit heavy on throttle and brakes while stuck) and an already clicky one on 31" swampers. I don't think they are any weaker than leafy ones. I have also torn a rear diff mount but if I was too worried about breaking it again I could reinforce it.

I haev seen MT baja claws at work and they suck IMO.

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have any opinions on the Silverstone MT's and what kind of K's you'd get out on them?

Trying to toss up between the Maxxis Bighorns or the Silverstone MT's.

Only reason why i am considering the Silvers is that i can get them for a very nice price.

I don't do much wheeling at all but would like to in the future - basically mud and rocks etc no sand.

as for the generals - theyre a radial and are DoT approved and legal.

I run 30" Treps and absolutely love them. :twisted: I have constantly compd the car over the last
12months with these tyres on and the worst I have done is rip a radius arm off the diff and snap a rear one in half. Personally haven't had problems with CVs yet (touch wood).
But I run two open diffs with standard gearing, I give it a fair bit of shit when I need to. :wink:
