Hey there,
Im In NZ, and possibly moving to Sydney with a new job.
I currently have a vit/escudo with 3'' calmini lift+front diff, 2'' body lift 31s +lsd.
I would quite like to get a jimny, lift it, gear it and go down that avenue. I have no idea about rules and compliance with modified vehicles in aussie, can anyone point me in the right direction, or give a brief dos and donts

start here...
plus here
there are a rediculous number of modification rules, tests etc that you technically have to pass.
what you refer to as a 'warrant of fitness' is called a 'pink slip' (e-safety check) here and that can be done at most mechanics for $40 or so. how strictly the rules are enforced changes dramatically.
major mods may be required to be 'engineered' to be 100% legal. if you arent a dickhead on the roads 90% od the time you will be sweet

My vit has a 3" calmini and 2" bodylift with 30's and It doesn't get a second look by the coppers, even when driven through shitney, When I've been pulled into RBT's I've actually been given compliments from a couple of them.
But yes, technically ANY car with modifications, whether it be as simple as an aftermarket exhaust, lowered whatever, "has to" be certified by an engineer. But really, unless it's taken to the extreme, too loud, too low, too fast that's when you should expect to be defected.
my last car, what you would call a mitsi cyborg was heavily modified and was certified, When I use to get pulled up by the cops they would say that they see on their system that it had been engineered and one cop said good on you for doing the right thing. I remember one cop pulling me over just to check the car out.

Thanks for that info, I had a read through. basically, most suspension mods would need to be engineered? over 50mm?
My escudo in NZ is certified was checked over by a vehicle engineer without the sway bar. Im all for doing things properly for saftey reasons.
the thing that worries me, is say i bought a euro suspension kit for a jimmy with new arms springs etc, would those parts need to be tested? that sounds expensive, what sort of costs would that estimate to? or does it all depend on 'which' engineer you go too?

Yeah i think it is 50mm total lift. so if you got 50mm spring lift + 50mm bodylift, you have to be enginerred. Thats what i understand anyway. But a lot depends on the rego examiner, if he fine with it youl get your pink slip and away you go, no enginnering required.

thats sounds fair enough, and once its engineered it is so for the life of the vehicle. so more pissing around after that accept going for pink slips every so often when you need them?

never really, just for rego every 12 months. Or until the police or RTA put you off the road, thats when you really need it. But like i said, if you get a fairly decent pink slip asser, should be no prob with minor mods.

Not quite for the life of the vehicle, just the life of the mods. Say you get a 2" susp lift and 2" body lift engineered, that's fine. If you then sort out some lower gearing and decide that 32" tyres would fit the bill, or maybe want to throw in a 1.6 engine, they both need to be engineered and THEY WILL LOOK AT ALL PREVIOUS MODS AGAIN.
A visit to the engineer can be expensive depending on how radical the changes are, anywhere between $250 and $1000 (or more!), so it's important to think out your modifications and plan to do as many in the one hit as a package.
Pink Slips are mandatory once a year when renewing registration, while a more detailed Blue Slip Inspection (similar to a NZ COF) is required to register an unregistered vehicle, one from Interstate, or one repaired after an insurance claim.

I was told by my mechanic that you're aloud a 2inch body 2 inch suspension and I think a 1 inch tyre lift without having to be engineered. Not too sure how true it is but those mods pass pink slip with him every time so I'm happy and haven't had any problems with cops in my 4runner and I don't imagine I'll have too many problems when I sort my Sierra out but I guess we'll see.

i just imported a vit with 2" body, 2"suspension and 31" tyres only needed pink slip. chap who did it even phoned rta to check, i asked him about engineering till he got bored with listening just said he was sure it didn't need it. been pulled police thought it was cool.

Someone needs to lose their job. For any Imported vehicle (even stock, unmodified form) to be registered in NSW, it needs a ADR compliance check from an Engineer signatory if it does not have an Aust Compliance plate or RAWS inspection to get a low-volume plate, and a full Blue Slip check. Pink Slip will not be sufficient as the vehicle needs to be ID'd and put into the RTA's computer and this can't be done on a Pink or E-Safety check. The RTA cannot even issue rego if the vehicle's VIN has not been put into their database via a blue slip or the Vehicle Identification Inspection unit.
For more facts, your "Chap" needs to READ THIS

sorry my mistake, it was blue slip. it also got compliance and id tested and personal import plate, weighed etc. all done by the book! so i guese "my chaps" job probably ok for now, (engineer signatory). thanks for the link, seen it before, thought it made sense to check with the rta as to registration, i know some might ask on here first for whats required but that would be stupid wouldnt it?
