hi people just wondering what work goes into welding the rear diff, its a 1.3 WT if that makes a diffrance

The problem with rear sierra centres (some older fronts also) is that they are fully closed. You have to pull the carrier out of the centre, and pull it apart, and weld the gears in there, but make sure the 4th side gear lines up nice, and the top plate can be bolted back on.

There is another way to wled them also, can't find link, but i have done it and they click and act abit weird.

Otherwise buy a spool, or other type of shit-wong or air locker that replaces the centre if you want to swap it to an open diff again.

Depends how handy you are at getting the backlash back to stock also.

IMO this is the best way to weld a diff. if you get the shits with it you can change side gears rather than f*$%ing a whole diff centre

so this just locks the back wheels so they both spin at the same speed. so it will keep pushin if one of the back wheels are off the ground.

Yep.

It will also keep the wheels spinning at the same speed on the road when you go round corners, so it will increase tyre wear, the tyres will skip a bit on hard lock, and it'll sqeak and squeal in car parks.

If you can live with that then go for it...

Dads normally dont like the idea.

I welded my side gears as per the last pic, they ended up ratcheting, wearing out the welds, then will eventually smash. On 33's.

That seems like a pretty good option. I've never liked the idea of welded diffs but this is a pretty good compromise.

i never knew could be done the way in that other pic just doin the side gears.Its kinda cool,ill try it one day and as you say saves wrecking a hole centre

i normally belt bolts in between the 4 spider gears,fill the crap out of it,then side gear back on,some minor weld again and bolt it all back up.ive broken 2 due to not enough weld but i suspect i have a 3rd one on its way out now after nearly 2 years

on this topic are the side gears used in the nt and wt diffs and all the different ratios out there the same

as in could i use the side gears out of a wt rear with a 3.7 or what ever ratio it is in an nt diff center with a 4.1 ratio?
