hi guys new to this site, i drive a pretty stock zook rock hoppers lockers etc nothing major, i have a problem with the carby. i took it out on sat night for its first 4by drive all was running fine, the car had been sitting around for about a year before i brought it i cleaned everything properly tank lines new filters etc was idling fine through the whole track until about halfway back out so 4 hours of driving was fine then the idle would drop right down or stall, now it idles fine sometimes and then will all of a sudden die right down or stall. does anyone know what the problem could be? thanks for or your help |

hey mate welcome to auszookers. this is a very common problem with zook carbys, i think it has something to do with blockages in the jets.. If you do a search you will find heaps of the same threads with info on how to adjust fuel mixture, idle speed. Another problem is the auto choke gives up. hope you find what you neeed. |

Yea i was looking at going efi though I'm weird I'm building a mini truck so I'm trying to spend less on this until the ute is done then I can build this 4by it goes really well for what it is all is stock except the rockhoppers and lockers which I just put in and it goes every where was just this idle problem annoying me  I am very grateful for the advice mate, tomorrow i will have a look at it as Mondays are my bourbon and tv night the one night i don't work on the cars ha ha

Does it cut out suddenly? Recently i took my sierra for a drive and it started cutting out straight away, i found the wires going to my coil had corrosion and was causing the coil to cut out. Cleaned up all the terminals and she was running sweet again. Covered everything with Vaseline too to stop it from happening again. |

No it doesn't just cut out mate just the idle cuts right down then will shut down not a sudden stop of the engine though thanks for that advice i will clean them up to just to make sure

a quick fix i have found that works is taking the carby hat off and reving the engine at about 2500-3000rpm and blocking the carb with your hand . before the motor stalls take your hand off! it cleans shit out of the jets i think! |

Sounds like a blocked jet. Check your air filter is clean, air hoses are airtight and your fuel filter is clean. I also think it's a good idea to add an in-line fuel filter at the carby. |

Yea I had just done all that, though maybe a jet i swapped lead two and three around and let it pop abit to see if it cleaned anything, i have now taken the carby off to have a look |

if its not a blocked jet its a stuffed choke... the auto wax chokes die and you get all sorts of weirdness - commonly though you get backfiring on engine braking and erratic idle. |

Both my mate and I would go away for the weekend and our cars would stall and idle funny. It only would happen on rough roads, dirt, corrugations ect, shaking up all the crap in the tank and fuel lines. We both ended up putting an extra fuel filter between the carby and mechanical fuel pump. Worked a treat, neither one of us have had a single carby problem since. |

If you take the air hose off the top of the carby and the butterfly valve is fully open when warm then your choke is fine. |

Yea I'm in the process of putting another fuel filter in the line closer to the carby as there is only the one filter at the rear near the tank. Thanks for all the help and advice i'am taking it all on board when I get some tyres and lift, or even just running properly again I'm keen to go out and climb some rocks I'm in west Sydney if anyone heads out

Running a secondary fuel filter between the carb and the ful pump usually stops any crap from getting into the ridiculously small idle jets. The zook fuel pumps have a rubber diaphram in them. As they age small bits of rubber can get loose and get into the carb. The fuel filter will help stop this as well as anything that gets past the main fuel filter. Layto.... |

Not a bad thing at all. Many years ago before i was injected (Circa 2003) i ran a secondary fuel filter. Never had a problem with idle jet blockage. Layto.... |

Yea thinking for now will go with the filter though once I have a few drives and that and the truck is finished being built I wouldn't mind throwing in an injected motor though I will see how serious I get into 4wding again I know the bug will bite me yet again

to everyone who comment and all the advice i thank you just got the carby back had a hole in one of the hoses causing an air leak so thats why it wouldn't idle, again thank you to all that helped and the car is all back together and running great thanks |
