recently aquired a new zook cause i really need another one, anyway has only been driven 3-4 times in the last 4 years and as such seals and bearings need replacing, it also has a massive death wobble between 50-70km/phr
i have replaced the wheel bearings, rotated the tyres, done the front brakes and adjusted the steering box (which seems to be at its maximum adjustment) the wobble remains. I was thinking the kingpins may need replacing ( i just regreased them) or the steering box may need replacing.
all of the tierods ect.. are in good nick.

any thoughts

steering damper, swivel seals, but every case is different, just replace teh front end

I had this same issue.
Not wobbles to that extent but I did get wobbles.
I replaced all the bearings and seals etc like you did.
But if you take the wheels etc off so that the Knuckle joint is pretty much the only thing showing. (With the King Pins still in)
You will be able to lift the female part of the knuckle vertically. Which shouldn't happen and I am pretty sure that this is where it is going wrong because I had the same issue.
If this is the case you will need to replace the King Pin bearings+The runners for the bearings & put the spacers back into the same spot..

Yeah I agree..
That will not solve anything at all.
And all it will do is wreck the new steering dampener you will get because of repetitious use.
P.S: You may need to tighten up the bearing in your wheel as well.

crap forgot to add i swaped the standard steering dampener for a newish rtc one i had laying round. I was going to do the king pin bearings as my next step but seeing as tho its a public holiday in perth tmoz i thought i would throw up the steering box idea cause i got one sitting here. I tried having the wheel bearings tight and a little looser to no avail.
I have had heaps of sierra's all of which develop a death wobble at some point, but they all required different things to fix it as you have mentioned
above.
any takers on the steering box idea, i thought that seeing as though its practically out of adjustment it must be nearly shagged.

can't hurt with the box, shackle's & bush's must be good to..

& don't forget to look at the rear bush, just because it's fixed doesn't mean it can't affect the steering..

How much play is there in your steering wheel, as in, turning before the wheels take up.

I had bad wobbles, dun everything I could think of, undun the locknut on the steering box, tightened the screw, relocked, and bingo, did do it 3 times, small steps. Solved but.

I had wobbles at about same speeds, for the majority it was caused by worn spring bushes and the swinging shackle pins were worn and allowed lateral movement, so i welded the head onto the shackle and replaced the nut side with 6mm plate. Seemed to work well (plus i fitted a steering dampner from a 40series)

i chased a shake problem for over 2 years.would get so bad at times that itd rip the wheel from my hands on the road and i didnt wanna hurt anyone else

2 manual steering boxes adjusted up
a power steering box
a set of wheel bearings
a swivel hub n kingpin kit
a heavy duty dampener
couple of different tie rods and draglinks
a hole new rebuilt front housing
thicker shackles as the extended ones on the car when i bought it flexed
new ome springs and bushes
numerous sets of different tyres all balanced up

Turns out when i got the ome springs they didnt have the back set of bushes for the front leaves so i fitted the front ones at the shackles and forgot about going in to get the new ones,2 years later i dropped the leaves to find the wrong bushes in there with excessive play,put a good stock zuk set in.......fixed :lol: with all 3 steering boxes it always had alot of play,that halved with the right bushes but i only ever looked from axles forward to be honest.Might be worth looking mate

good advise stekky :lol: stek helped me throughout my elimination process the other week with ideas and i was shocked that the rear bushes were the cause thats for sure.

stek also mentioned kinpin drag,may be another cause.

Well what a day - replaced so far
-wheels and tyres
-wheel bearings
-kingpin bearings
-tie rods/steering arms
-steering box
-brakes
The culprit i suspect is the shackle bushes, i swaped them with some old ones that are better than the ones in there and it eliminated the wobble under 60 km/phr i will get some new ones in tomoro.

Oh and that track is severely hardcore, i just made it to the start of the track and had to turn round with no gearing and only a front locker. When your twin locked with gears and dont mind panel damage i will take anyone who wants to go out for a run. :wink:

Yep me when i finally get my zook going again.

Ok, when i got mine i eliminated my wobble down to;

First i replaced the steering box, but still had some wobble.
So it ended up being a combo of shackle bushes and the little uni joint that is on the steering rod to the firewall (and you cant buy these genuine, or so suzistore said) so i got a good condition 2nd handy

do you even own a suzuki TZAR ?

anyway changed front bushes and adjusted shims on kingpin bearings, death wobble has now minimized and is now only prevelant at 70km/phr will do a wheel alignment tommorow and hopefully that resolves my issue

and... it still wobbles :cry: will recheck the bearings and have brand new king pin bearings that i will try as well as changing the front shocks and altering the caster slightly by placing a small wedge between the springs and the perch. have already changed the bushes which reduced wobble a little, as did removing the shims on the kingpins but not enough to make it drivable

so when you fucked with the kingpins did you measure teh starting torque to turn the hub like the manual says? no of course you didnt

Just solved my death wobble. What would happen with mine was, it was fine till you hit about 50km's/hr, then if you ran over anything bigger than a tiny stone you get caught in your boot tread, it'd set up a death wobble. So anyway, tried evrything, checked wheel bearings, checked all the shackles and bushes, checked the king pins, checked the wheels for balance and roundness and for bumps and bubbles on the tyres, checked the steering joints, all the track rods ends, you name it I checked it.
Then I decided to have a go at the steering box, as has been said previousley, I jacked the car so the wheels were just off the ground, I put the chassis stands under the chassis not the diff housing (I don't know what difference it would make, just wanted to make sure the sterring was under no pressure or influence) and started to turn the little screw, a little at a time, relock the locking nut, try the steering lock to lock, until the little screw didn't want to go anymore and the steering had no tight spots in it, and hey presto, took it out for a run, no more death wobbles yipppeeee

don't set toe in to factory specs. start at 0mm edzachery and work from there.
