Post subject:  Alloy diff
im about to airlock the front of the vitara. im after advice. Im thinking of building a bash plate to cover the diff from rock damage. Will this solve the problem. Its getting fitted next week and times running out on finding a GVsteel one.

rock damage is the least of your worries with the alloy front diff, it's mainly the rear pinion mount that causes the failures. you can build a collar that braces the pinion mount.

It's not an impact thing, it's the diff twisting under load, no fix apart form Gv steel..

locker will only make it worse..

i'd get a steel diff before fitting the locker, when the alloy does explode it might damage your air locker.

Must be a manual, as auto GV is alloy too, I think.
Mine was from a 98 GV Manual.

being a 1.6 you will be able to use either style from a manual V6 GV, just make sure you get the pinion mount with it if it is the later one.

there are a few thread floating around here with pics of the 2 types of pinion mounts, they changed pinion mount slightly in the start of 99 or late 98.

I suggested this to Arb and he seems to think its not gonna break once its locked. Explaining its from diff exploding from wheel spinning flat out and when it hits ground it breaks. And this shouldnt happened once locked.

But i cant sleep so i better just get the steel one. Too many pennys to throw down the drain

this link shows how much the sump on the SV420 (2.0L) needed to be adjusted to get the late model pinion mount to work, i'm not sure how much clearance there is on the 1.6 SE416 vitara's

either of the manual GV steel diffs will work in the 1.6 going by what Darkhorse has just done.

Give them the nod to send it? Comes with centre. Will arb fit this? im assuming they pull the old diff apart so they can swap it them around

With yours being a 1.6 it should bolt in just make sure its from a manual GV

being a 1.6 you don't have any real options for diff gears & transfer gears will only reduce low range.

I sold a rear center for $70 a few months back and now that the one in my car is on its way out i got a price on another one $430 8O

what ratio is in carbie model? If i get locker fitted in new diff ect. Can i replace the gear ratio later on? Or will the airlocker model change?
