Just committed to pullling my 1.3 out of my 94 swb sierra to get rebuilt.
It has stuffed valve stem seals, so going to rebuild the whole engine, as it has done over 200,000km.
Going to get suzy world in heidelberg to do it. Just a full rebuild, with oversize pistons.
Going to put a HD clutch in at the same time.
Will be interesting to see just how 'worn' the old engine was, when I compare to the fresh 1.3....
Will take some pics when it starts to happen.
Any advice I'll take...

Theres not much cost diff between a rebuild and a reco $400 maybe. I believe the reco carries a 1 year warranty (but engine needs to be installed by a mech).
You should also get your carby reco'd.
Itll probably cost around $2400 to have suziworld do the whole lot.
If you pull the engine yourself, and dont reco the carby you will save $600-800 (but lose your warranty).
Engine will still be gutless, you wont notice much difference.

Get a low km 1.6 donk, use your 1.3 head, manifolds carby and exhaust.
$200 adapter plate and $100 of other bits, and its a day swap.
If you look hard, you can do this for under $500.
Probably best option if money is tight now, as if you convert to 16v efi down the track, you have only wasted $100. Could put tbi on the 1.3 8v head if you want cheap efi.
Fuel economy will be better than the 1.3, more torque, quite use friendly (bush fixable). Still stalls on hills like the 1.3 (apparently).

1.6 efi
coil pack baleno, vit 1.6, etc.
Adapter plate $200, donk, loom, ecu, fuel tank with submersible pump, or surge tank and fuel pump.
Much more expensive and time consuming. But better option imo than rebuild or reco the 1.3
Best fuel economy, best power, best torque, user friendly (not bush fixable, but more reliable)

Just whatever you do, dont buy an HM GEM reco motor, they are shit, and im not only saying that because mine blew up. Every mate who has had one, and others who I have had discussions with on various forums, have not had one survive beyond warranty period.

B4T - Not sure what size. its a 94 swb sierra, WT.

I would consider a 1.6 bottom end. Can I fit my current extractors up to the 1.6? What would these cost?
Will speak to guys at suzi world, just dont want have to stuff around with engine number changeovers.

you've got me interested on this one. ;)

I can't find the right tag's to search for it, got any good links to write ups on what I need to get the ball rolling?

To use 1.6 donk with your 1.3 head, 1.3 manifolds etc (cheapest option).
Get a 1.6 engine without any cracks in the block, pref low kms. Choose carefully, itll save you some coin.
What you need is the g16a timing cover, g16a idler pulley, g13ba head gasket.
Remove the 1.6 timing cover, head, remove the gasket etc, make sure channels are clear and bore is in good condition.

Whip out the 1.3.
Remove head, and remove gasket. Inspect it, clean channels etc.
If your 1.3 head is rooted, consider sourcing a good condition 1.3 head from a barina/swift with low kms and install the sierra cam shaft and dizzy.

If your lucky go to a pickapart you may be able to mix and match the block and head there and come away with a 1.6 with 1.3 head (no head gasket etc) for about $120 (or $150 or so with 3 month warranty).

install 1.3 head gasket and bolt 1.3 head to 1.6
Use the timing pulleys of 1.3 or 1.6 (dont mix and match). I will use the 1.6 for mutli rib pulley already attached.
Use the 1.3 water pump, attach baleno multi rib pulley on water pump.
Install the g16a idler pulley.

Install g16a timing cover.
Install falcon (mitsubishi 110A alt).

Install BenT adapert kit, install 1.3 flywheel, install engine.
Bolt 1.3 manifolds to 1.3 head.

Still need to mod the oil pick up, and install 1.3 sump.
Still need to mod the sierra starter motor etc.

EDIT: All this below is added
I believe this is whats needed (all info is from suziworld @ heidelberg), I have all the crap ready to go, just waiting on some help to install it (im injured/off work and in the middle of moving houses).

Ian and Mick said this path used to be extremely common, and is the most cost effective solution. Ian said spending so much and so much effort for 1.6efi, I should have just bought a vitara.
Ian said they had an old sierra done this way, with a few extra mods (ground cam shaft etc) and it went very nicely.

Another benefit is it looks very very close to stock.

Logically, its better than rebuilding the 1.3, and easier than the 1.6 efi.

So possibly $150 3mth warranty on engine + $200 BenT kit + $100 for gasket, idler and new g16a timing cover, $43 for 110A falcon alt.
Low km 1.6 with 110A alt for under $500 and a day to install.

you lost me.
The 1.3 head on the 1.6 sounds like a good conversion, but will require me to do a fair bit of stuff out of my league.
I will pull engine, and get suzyworld or a mechanic to rebuild as a fresh engine.

Dont use it that often, and will get transfer gears to improve highway driving.

the 1298 which is the G13BA was used from about mid 1989 onwards if i remember correctly, so this would be what you have.
