Post subject:  little smokey...
The zookie is gettin a little smoky under deceleration, Noticed it today while the weather was fine n the fast back rear open.. My first thought is valve seals.. seems a little down on power to.. Any suggestions as to what the issue maybe before I go tearing it down!?

Smoke on decelleration usually means valve stem seals but there could be a few causes.
1. The seals are old and have hardened so don't seal anymore.
2. The valve guides are worn and have flogged the stem seals out.

Either way, to fix it will require removal of the head and a full inspection/service.

you dont *have* to pull the head off to do the seals, but it helps to be pretty patient and have nimble fingers

how old is the oil? ive found a lot of times you can clear it up well enough with an oil change

Correct.. It is possible to do the seals with the head on the car but I find it easier to do it on a bench rather than bending over an engine bay.

^^ funny you say that - and theres a solution! Drop all the air from the front tyres =P lowers the engine bay tons... haha

i have a air line that fits into the plug hole and the compressed air holds the
valve up so ya can replace the seal. i haven't used it yet but the theory sounds good.

This way works, we used to have adapters to keep the cylinders pressurised when i was on the tools.

Thay work well, just be sure piston's on BDC or is soon will be.. :lol: :wink:

That works but the air escaping everywhere is bloody annoying.. I'd rather remove the plug and fill the cylinder with rope and then wind crank over till it stops.
Then you can compress spring without valve moving.

this, or if you are game like me youll find if you drop the valve with teh piston at TDC it wont go far enough to be a problem anyway
