Post subject:  jimny rock crawling gears

hi all,
im new on here, ive got a 03 jimny with 80mm tough dog lift with 20mm rear and 40mm front spacers, kumho kl71 mt 215 75r15's, extended diff breathers, dual battery setup, extractors, 2inch zorst and twin rear pipes, tough dog rtc dampener and in the middle of interior lighting and a 3 inch stainless steel snorkel. but my question, is there any way of modifying the standard transfer for lower ratio gearing in low range? without replacing the whole transfer out of a sierra etc. the reason for this is ive found is the jimnys ability to crawl with low revs isnt real good considering the max torque is at 4100rpm and seems to bounce up hills rather then climb. just curious to if anyone knows anywhere in aus that do jimny transfer gearing that doesnt effect high range?

Welcome to AZ mate!

nice rig...I am pretty sure that atm the sierra transfer is the only way to play with reduction gears.Depending on what tyres you will be running(if you plan to upgrade??)

you can run 4.16's(for 29-30's) with only a 12% reduction in high and 84% in low...but again depends on what diff centers you run as I am sure the WT sierras have 3.7(and thats what the reduction figures are based off)

Trial Jimny sell them. so do APIO 58star?

Also the figures you have stated are based on a sierra. So the 4.16:1 is 12% lower than a 1.3L sierra transfer, not a jimny.

Thats why I said I was pretty sure...but not 100%....And I know that that is based on the wt sierra, thats why is stated that it would depend on the diff ratio of the jimny

Its got nothing to do with the diff ratio, its to do with the Jimny transfer ratios...

The diff centres are irrelevent.

If he is only changing the transfer gears, then the 4.16:1's would be (for arguments sake) 12% lower than what he has in his stansfer case now. The % refers to the amount of reduction over the factory transfer case gearing; not the final drive.

I based that on him doing the sierra transfer swap....

if he was to put the wt sierra case in them he would get 12% reduction in high(over the stock sierra case, and if he is running a different dif ratio it would change...) the same way that running a wt case in a coily changes the "reduction" based on the coils 3.9 ratio to the wt 3.7..

No, the reduction is purely a function of the original transfer case ratios and the new transfer case ratios. A 12% reduction in transfer gearing is a 12% reduction in transfer gearing, regardless of diff ratios...

yes BUT the statement "12%" is based on a wt stock case...so the 12% reduction is reducing the "original"(wt not jimny) case by 12%,so putting that case into the jimny may reduce it X%(depending on the difference between a stock wt case and stock jimny) and depending on the difference in diff ratios it will effect the final drive ratio which will effect the overall reduction.

So if he has a Jimny case with stock ratios of Hi:1.320 and Low:2.145, going to a Sierra case with H:1.580 and L: 4.162 will give a 19.6% reduction in Hi and 94% reduction in Lo. Why even mention the 12%/84% figures? The Sierra conversion is attractive because it increases the spread between Hi and Lo ratios.

Trial Jimny offer replacement gears for the Jimny case, but both ratios are reduced by the same amount of 24% to H:1.63, L:2.65, meaning your on-road speed is slower and you off-road reduction is not as good as the Sierra case. Plus you still end up with a chain driven case rather than gear driven.

If those reduction figures are too low, just find a 1.0lt case from a Maruti with 1.580 and 2.511 ratios. Replacing the Jimny case with that will give a reduction of Hi by 19.6% and Low by 17%. That would give back a bit of power and overcome bigger tyres.

thanks heaps for that info but im going to try to get the jimny gear cos there seems to b a bit more mucking around with mounts and fiddly bits like the speedo transducer etc. changing the gears is only a couple of hours. chain drivin transfers arnt a plus lol going from an unbreakable mq shorty gear transfer to chain, judging on all the gq patrols and cruisers that come through work. but thanks heaps for all the helpful info

Don't waste time mucking around, get to work earning a wage. You'll need around 3 weeks pay to buy the set of 58 Star Toransufagia (Transfer Gear) from APIO, but then you do get 58% reduction in low range only. (Gears ONLY app AU$2000, fitted into your case app $2400). I think the Trial Jimny gears are about half that, but your still only getting 24% reduction. There's a lot to be said for the ratios available for the Sierra transfer for their cost.
