| Post subject: | Carby Recondition |
Hey all. I need to rebuild my Carby on my Suzy because apparantly that is what needs to be done to it in order for it to stop stalling. I have tried all of those little trickey things but nothing worked. I tried to do it here at home because I bought a carby reconditioning kit of ebay for about $44. And I have been getting quotes from around town.. So far $380 sounds like the average quote... Which is shit. I tried doing it here at home but every hose I touched snapped like it was not even supposed to be there. Because they are all so damn corroded! So I was wandering if it would be better just to buy a brand new Carby!! Becuase I have seen a few Weber ones for about $310.. So what would everybody suggest. |

perhaps if you replaced the corroded vacuum lines it would fix your dramas but if you have pulled your carby apart then i reckon you would have stuffed it, wants33s can sell ya a good one. |

If you don't do extreme angles, a weber is a ripper upgrade. The power difference is amazing. Add a good exhaust system, and simply stunning. |

$380 isn't too bad IMO. I've probably been ripped off in the past though. If it is done right and you take measures to stop it getting clogged full of crap (extra fuel filter, good air filter, all hoses sealed) then you 'should' have a car that will run great for the next decade or so as long as you keep the routine maintenance up to it. |

Umm. I didn't get that far. I only started pulling the hoses off and the majority of them snapped... |

x2 on the vacuum lines being the problem. if they snap, cut the remainder off with a knife, its what i did... i recently replaced all my vacuum lines, no power difference, but its sooooo much smoother idle now! for a few dollars, even if it doesnt work its worth at least trying |

OK.. Well i just replaced all the vacuum leads and to my dissapointment it did not change the problem.... So what now?!? :'( It is also spitting out a shitload of smoke if this means anything? |

the carby is spitting out smoke or the exhaust is? if its the exhaust, the carby isnt the problem, its within the engine itself. i dont know specifics, someone here can explain properly... if its the carby i would be very very worried... and not driving it at all |

well i would be 99.9% sure that the smoke's not carby related. it may be the reason for the stalling, but the smoke (most likely) would be from the engine being old and worn out. its relatively fine to drive (as far as i know) just make sure you keep an eye on the oil level someone please jump in here and explain properly, i dont know the technical terms, or exactly what wears out. |

Ok.. But the engine has only done about 40,000Km because my brother bought it from Japan or China and although it is 15 years old it has done little Km's |

Ok everyone.. Well I did the recondition... And put it back onto the engine.. But it still does not idle properly? I adjusted the idle speed to about 1500 RPM and it was idling. But really shitty, like the revs kept jumping around from about 1100 to 1600.. I than gave it a bit of revs and got it up to about 5000 then let it drop back to idling and it started to die again... SO... I am back to my original problem of it not staying alive whilst idling... I was thinking that maybe it is the timing? It is no longer puffing smoke out the muffler if this helps? |

i'm not a mechanic but may be it might be sucking air where the manifolf bolts to the head or were the carby bolts on |

Ok, so you have hard the craby rebuilt and it is still stalling at idle, idleing rough and uneven? Is that the picture? Probably best to do the standard tune up items before jumping to any conculsions. Set of 4 NGK plugs, new airfilter, new fuel filter. pull the distributor cap off, clean all of the posts inside, and shine the rotor button contact surface with some wet and dry. Replace the plug and coil leads. Then, if you still have an issue start chasing random vacum leaks and timing issues. |

Ok... Well I have new spark plugs, new fuel filter, new spark plug leads, new ignition coil, Cleaned the dizzy, and the air filter is really clean.. |

I had same problem a looong time ago. I had a real rough and random idle like you say, and stalling at every set of lights, but a 'pro' carby rebuild sorted it out (DIY efforts = shop visit later Otherwise try torquing down all the bolts connecting the carb to the manifold, maybe a just a fracco loose. If not... suck it up and spend on a reco unit. |

Alrighty then. When you did the re-co on the carby did you clean the idle jet out? These are super small on the asian carbs fitted to the zook and block up at the slightest bit of grit. Make sure the carb is super clean, especially the jets and idle ports. Fit a fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb float bowl fuel inlet. This will help filter the incoming fuel and take out any bits of crap that the fuel pump can shed. The fuel pump diaphrams can age and drop bits of rubber into the lines. It honestly sounds like the idle jet of the ports leading to it are partially blocked. Double check that your vacuum lines are all not leaking and in the correct places. Check your ignition system and alternator charge rate too. To the person that stated the smoke from the exhaust could not be carby related, you are so wrong its not funny. Smoke comes from combustion issues. Depending on the colour of it, it may be tottally carby related. Black smoke = Too rich Blue smoke = Oil in the combustion process White smoke = Water in the combustion process (or auto/brake fluid) If the carby is playing up it can cause overly rich mixtures. What colour was the smoke that you have seen? A small amount of steam is often normal on cold start, especially on cool mornings. A few drops of water can also be fine, as part of the condensation and the by product of the catalitic converter. Layto.... |

Vacuum lines are all fine I have checked them a number of times. Alternator and ignition system are fine as well.. I am almost 100% sure that I unblocked the idle jet.. I dont know which jet was which.. But I unblocked every single one of them... And the smoke was black.. But it is gone now. |

There are the Two jets in the bottom of the float bowl that lead into the main and secondary throats of the carby. To access and remove these you remove the two 14(?)mm bolts on the bottom of the float bowl on the side, then screw the jets out. The idle jet discharges at the bottom of the main throat of the carby. Layto.... |
