You will need a press, and a little knowledge on shimming etc. So I have been told. I have never personaly done it, but it seems do able if you can read instructions and take your time

Got my 6.5s today as well as a roctoy ring. Should i attempt the gear install myself or give it to transmission shop. Im a apprentice bush mechanic at best....(read i know the diffrence between a flathead and phillips lol). How much would a transmission shop charge for this sort of thing? |

buy a longish gear puller, a rubber mallet and use your brain  it's all very straight forward, just make sure you check the gaps with shims

i think shippo got his done at the shop same time as a clutch with a 1 grand bill or close to. seems dear but if you dont think you can pull it off its worth the coin when you dont bust a case or lock up a bearing,shaft etc. Dont forget to grab some new bearings and so on when fitting the gears.They werent part of the kit when i got mine.Cost about another $60. A small press would make life easier and the instruction page from lowrange will make it all possible but if your unsure its alot of money |

Yeah i got new barings too. Had a look at instructions and it seems do able, nothing major. Jus have to keep checking everything as i go. |

Take your time, buy a tub of the correct bearing grease, and print out the instructions. It is fairly easy, the instructions are very good. |

It is fairly easy, the instructions are very good. Bearing grease?? In a transfer case?? Its all lubricated by gear oil.

Yes grease is required for the initial lubrication of the bearings as the transfer like a manual gear bag is splash lubricated and some of the bearings depending on their location can suffer from a lack of lubrication before the splashing lubricates them enough to protect them. |

i'm looking at getting some of these now the $ is even better than before. was gonna ask about bearings but its been covered so thx, also do you need a rocktoy ring or mighty kong or anything running these with 30's? |

If you decide to get it done at a shop, make sure you pull the case out instead of dropping the whole car down. You'll save yourself a fair bit in labour costs. |

But a mechanic will charge you a few hours labour
Gears are simple to fit, just follow the instructions and double check everything you are doing and you should be fine. To help pressing bearings on you can heat the bearing and freeze the shafts, makes them slip on nice and easy. Layto.... |

just read through the instructions that came with my gears and cant see anything about shimming gears. it says to take a shim/spacer out, then put it back in the new gears. is that all thats involved? |

I realised I hadn't put the shim back in when the case was all back together and gasket goo and bolted up. When I thought about where it had been, it couldn't have made a difference because it was behind a bearing or something iirc. Probably does make a difference but it hasn't broken yet! |

I'm not 100% happy with my transfer yet, it didn't have any shims when stripped but there's noticeable slack in it when going on-and-off the throttle. I'd like to know more about shimming in the transfer. |

Is that slack caused by the gears being worn? OR The shaft moving side to side because of the cut of the gears? |

ok so i got the tcase back in tonight, ended up soaking wet from laying in the rain  got a few Q's
1) they are a little noisy, is this normal? 2) will they put my speedo out even more than just wheel size? i struggle to hold 80 (reading on speedo) but i fell this is at least 10kms out. do have about 150km winds here atm so that didnt help |

All the slack in my driveline is in the shafts and diffs as far as I can tell while driving, or are you checking by turning the transfer by hand? |
