What's the purpose of the brake surround thingys (insert proper name here) - the large plate on the inner side of the front disc brakes on a Sierra? Are they just for protection or do they serve a purpose I'm not aware of? |

Are they just for protection or do they serve a purpose I'm not aware of? Pretty sure they do act as a sort of water splash guard when driving on road. |

I thought they were to 'protect' the rotor from stone damage and prevent stones/tar getting into the pads. Most people take them off to let mud/water out quicker. |

The backing plate only retains bearings (among other things) on the rear drumbrakes. The backing plate on the front discs does nothing but deflect stones n shit, make nice squealing noises when stones get stuck behind it, and it also collects mud behind the flange so the mud can eat away at the hub seal. |

I have no front plates. And my rears are modded to get the axle out without removing brakes. |

they are there to keep RTA happy, remove them and they will have you in their sights |

they are a stond guard and also aid in keeping the rotors at operating temp. B4T |
