yer put my 4.9's in last week from lowrange, im only running 29's and think they are unreal, absolutly improved the zook 10x mind you im also locked in the front. 31's next and i think it will be geared pretty much spot on for what i do

Guys, just ordered a set of 4.9 transfer case gears for my 94, 1.3l sierra. Thoughts? Keep in mind I'm only running 30", and planning to go to 31" ONLY in 18 months or so. Cant wait! |

I've got 4.9 and 31" tyres and it suits me well. i used to have 6.5 and in my opinion 4.9 are better suited for up to 31 tyres than 6.5 gears. you just use 1st low more often than with 6.5. (1st low with 6.5 was more useful for steep descends than driving up the hill). there is many people who have 6.5 and 31" tyres in their zooks and they happy to. |

hey Andy, Hows the bar going? 4.9s are bullet proof, been running them in my rig for years now. On 31s they will be perfect for victorian driving. Yep, running 4.9s and 31's and I think they're perfect. Perfect rpm on road and does all I need it to offroad. |

I'm buying the kit through cal off road. When you install the gears do you need to also purchase a full rebuild kit ($115) to enable you to rebuild the transfer case? How hard is it to install the gears? Thanks |

i have a rock lobester, so it's 4.9 and i run 3.9 diffs, and 29" tyres..... i wouldn't go any taller tyres wise, but i drive mostly rock.... |

I thought rocklobster was 4:1 
Ill probs go slightly against the grain here and say if you can find 5.14's they would be a slightly better option. I have the 4.9's on 30's with 3.7 diffs and could go that weeny bit lower offroad especially on the rocks. Any tcase lower gearset will point you in the right direction tho

I was considering running 5.38 Diffs and 6.5 Transfers on 33s.. But i'm just going to stick to the standard 3.7 ratio.. If i blow a few axles/cvs/centres ill think about Lux Diffs and i'll downgear them to the lowest. |

Everyone says this, and fair call, but i still dont understand what the issue with not using 1st gear with 6.5's is? Whats the issue with using 2nd/3rd and 4th and still having the benefit of a very low 1st for desends and uber tech sections? |

There's no issue with running 31's and 6.5's so long as your terrain justifies it, otherwise it's just a wasted gear in the gearbox, and you're always in 4th low or swapping between low and high. 31's, 6.5's peak torque in 4th low: 21km/h. 31's, 4.9's peak torque in 4th low: 29km/hr At 6000rpm the difference is 37 to 49 km/h If your terrain justifies the use of 87:1 crawl, cool. I think 66:1 crawl is pretty usable with 31's though and would make for a less one-dimensional car. I am very low geared (6.5's and 5.12's) which suits my motor, the weight of my car and the stuff I like to drive, but I have to use 4th low on greasy hills and that doesn't give me anywhere to go if I need more speed, I have to stop and use high range.
