driving home from wheeling today and i had a huge bearing faliour. but the bearing didnt colapse, infact it still spun fine, the axel actualy pulled throtgh the bearing and cupling at 40kph. the bearhing was not seezed, or hot. a bit ruff feeling to turn tho. we simply pushed the axel back in and drove home. now i know i need new bearings but is this common? what would cause this? |

worn axle from a siezed bearing (possibly previously fitted bearing), the axle turns on the inner race of the bearing causing wear on the axle shaft. REPLACE AXLE or it could be from the incorrect wheel bearing being fitted but I would say this is less likely than worn axle shaft. |

Having seen the pics I wouldn't be driving it til its fixed... Next time you might lose the wheel completely.... |

the zook is home now all safe  at 50kph, wheel didnt move. and trust me it wont be moving again!
i will pull the axel out and run the verneris over and speek to some bearing people. strange i have just never herd of this happning before! coily axels arnt exactly easy to come buy! |

Remove your bearing and retainer. Check if axle is worn from spinning in bearing. If seriously worn, scoring/ shoulders etc replace axle. If not, Clean it up. Prime with loctite primer or clean with metho, Loctite bearing retainer fluid and use a new bearing and retainer. The Loctite retainer is like loctite for bolts etc. But specialised for retaining bearings. It is dark green. Sould be able to buy it in serious tool shops and bearing places. Maybe even supercheap if your lucky, i know they stock threadlocker. |

Thanks mate sounds like a plan, i will get on to weves soon about it and get some new bearings i did look at the axel when it was out, there was some light scoreing on it, noshoulders to be felt tho. is this a common issue at all? |

Can be common on any shaft/axle. The axle could of been worn before you got it from a seized bearing. If the bearing siezes solid, the next part to force to turn is the inner race spinning on axle. But that also depends how much contact is on the outer retaining section. How is the housing? |

not sure about housing as i am yet to pull it apart. i might sit her in the back yard for a few weeks as i need to do wheel bearings, new center and control arm mnunts. |

Ok well.. the drivers wheel bearing, was broken in half, as in the outer race had broken, the only thing holding the 2 parts of the outer race together was the seal, and in the inner had cracked the whole way round... not quite sure what has caused the fail.. but thats what has happend. i have the center out atm aswell as i am getting the locker shimmed up a bit to make it more "friendly" there dosent appear to be any damage on the axel tho. |

thanks mate! but the axel is fine! just pressed (see bashed) new bearing on and it was DAM tight! |

Maybe the bouncing up the steep and rocky creek bed on your right rear wheel had something to do with it. 
You did say they were pretty old too didn't you? Remind me to do mine when I get home! |

yeah but the bearing had been cracked for a long time buy the looks of it. oh wel new ones in now
