Post subject:  Lifted leaf spring heights.
Transport (Tas) list the suspension data measurement as:

Vertical measurement wheel centre to top of wheel arch at unladen mass: Front 425mm, Rear 460mm.

According to VSB14, only lifts more than 50mm need to be approved.
As I have a 1 inch body lift, I'm looking for a spring set-up to get me as close to 450mm front and 485 rear as possible, without going over. This will be with standard length shackles too.

So, time to get out the tape measures again fellas :lol:
Measurements are taken from hub centre straight up to the wheel arch. Left and right, if you have a lean.
Please include height of body lift, length of extended shackles, weather you have removed leaves or not, engine (1.6 will be heavier) front bar, winch, age of springs, have they sagged etc...

Here's the sort of info I'm after:
CairnsZook's '94 Sierra
Front 470L, 440R
Rear 500L, 480r
1 inch body lift.
Dobbinson 2in lifted springs, 10 years old.
Front shackles 20mm longer, rear standard.
Some leaves removed, sagged to buggery.
1.6, steel winch bar, winch, plasma line.

Here you go dave. Just got my other custom springs in and took it for a drive to settle them. This is what I have ATM measured from wheel center to bottom of wheel arch.

DF = 490mm
PF = 485mm

DR = 505mm
PR = 500mm

Note that I have also a virtual lift so you can also compare my sill heights to yours and take the difference of the measurements. I measured to the center of the sill between the arches at its lowest point (that double skin just under the sill) to the ground:

DS = 475mm
PS = 470mm

I have; stock shackles, custom leafs, RUF, 1.6, alloy front bar, rear seats in, 30"spare-shovel-axe-full jerry can hanging off the tailgate also.

Anti-susie lean??? Maybe you just had too many of those funny drinks while you were working on it...



Has anyone ever fitted new, standard height springs?
Can you get a reasonable amount of flex out of them? :?:

Std rear springs are the same length as OME rears and they do also flex the same from my tampering around with them.

Go measure your sill heights so we can compare

Jeez mate, it sounds like you've been hanging around those WA blokes. :?


Your front is about 60mm above stock, your rear is about 40mm over. Once your fronts settle a bit, you'll still be within the 50mm limit.

I'm about 30mm higher than stock, including a 25mm BL. 8)

Your flares aren't lifted are they? Why don't you measure to there?
Where is this "double skin sill" you speak of?

Sorry I men't flares are lifted on this one. Double skin sill is pretty much the lowest part just under the sill, where the two metal skins are spot welded together.

for sill height yes, but we are measuring our lifts from the center of axle to flare to determine spring lift. I just put the sill height thing in so I can compare cairnszook's spring heights with mine as ive moved my flares.
