I am going to be turning the Vitara into a Tourer and need to figure out how I can store

1.Recovery gear
2.Hand Winch
3.Tent
4. 5 Litre Water Bottle.
5.Camp oven..
6. Tool Boz
7 First aid Kit
all in the Boot Space of a 93 5 Door Vitara..

Made from 18mm ply covered in marine carpet.. draw runners are ball bearing type, you can get them from Bunnings or a Cabinet maker supplies.

All you need is a power saw, cordless drill & some screws..

You should be able to do something very similar in your wagon..

Total coast of materials is around $100

how about a roof rack...

keep your eye out for a cargo barrier, that will go a long way to allowing you to pack all the way to the roof.

look at what your taking and try to pack it so the things you need to get to are easilly at hand, even though you might never use the hand winch and its heavy so you think down low is good, you dont want to unpack the entire car while covered in mud to get yourself out then repack it all so draws like SP1086 has would be great for that

do you need to use the rear seats? you can fold them down for plenty of room for stuff as well

I can get enough stuff for 2 people into the back of my SWB, including a 50l fridge, Bruce got enough stuff into his GV to go to the cape with the back seats still being used, so its possible you just have to think hard to use all your space, things like storing all your cutlery inside the campoven and instead of taking a frypan use the campoven lid and so on


this rack was made up originally for a vit like yours with the seats folded forward, was designed to fit everything in nice and still be accessible, something like this combined with some sturdy plastic storage boxes might be OK too.

It will be a Tourer so seating for 4 in comfort will be required...
I am looking into the Shelf thing.. May be one long Shelf will be the way to go so the whole lot can be pulled out when needed and Easy to pack back in..

And while the roof rack would be practical.. its bad enough sitting at 3500rpm on the highway I don't wish to add another 400 rpm to it and add to the cross wind effect...

put things like chairs and other low stuff on the roof rack and it wont affect it on the highway one little bit

no but the rack itself creates drag..

so do wiper blades , trust me you wont notice the difference or worry about it once you are loaded with gear and 4 people to go camping

Now all but being a diff car but relevant to what you are trying to do,I get about 9 to 10 lts per 100. With the crap in there I got (going up the cape with 4 people) 14 to 15 per 100. That's not bad. I have done trips on my own with about the same amount of crap in there and still got the same usage of fuel. (14 to 15)

Even with the roof rack on fuel was still at 14 to 15 per 100. Theres no way (JMO) you will stop extra fuel or drag with a rack on. Like Royce said, "so do wiper blades"

How do you add more revs up the freeway??
My car will still do the same revs at 100kph with or without a load on?
I think you were trying to say (or mean) you would have to drop down a gear to keep to the same speed??

Got Shazza to thank for that mate. She packed it every day. Yep, 4 people 3 weeks up the cape through the Tele track. Was great.

and Yes.. I mean I would have to kick back to maintain Highway speeds... which adds to more fuel...
at the moment I am amazed at just how little it drinks when touring..

The shelf Idea is looking to be a winner...
