Light as a feather alloy box trailer is the base, holden 5stud pattern axles.. Will be changed to Zook.. So i can run my spare sunnys and some A/Ts

So it's your standard SPUA leaf spring setup currently..
I'm thinking SPOA and ext shackles, and set the mounts right so i have a nice shackle angle for downtravel (Don't really think UP travel would be too swell on a trailer)

I've thought about replacing springs with longer ones, but.. What sorts of springs could i use?

Maybe some heavy duty rear hilux/GU ute/Troopy ones or something?

And i know the current trend on new threads in this subforum is to evolve into a tech fueled flame war.. So
How about drop shackles on a trailer?
Lmao.. JK :D

Sierra rears are good, why put 1 tonne springs in something that will weigh 500kg at best?

trailers dont flex, notice the little ball shaped thing at the middle front, not really going to offer any resisitance to make the springs move is it

I'll whip out the tape measure and see if Zook rears will fit in the current mount points.. And i've had over 1tonne in it before.. And plan to again
Depends i guess what the load spring is rated for..? I don't want it rock hard all the time, but it will have to carry a tonne without problems

Well i thought about the resistance, i recon i can whip something up to fix that problem

if you do actually go off road with it you would be crazy to use heavy duty anything.
just get some nice soft coils and be done with it. at least until the alloy fatigues.
oh and some form of rebound dampening is a great idea as well
this suspension is available as a kit.

and over 750kg and ya need to have breaks plus i wouldn't use ford/holden bearings if ya tow heavy.

Well the trailer is very light.. So i dont need brakes for it
And wasn't planning on it haha, Zook all round

Sounds dangerous to me...

When Shep mentioned 750Kg needing brakes he wasn't talking about the empty weight of the trailer.... 750Kg is trailer AND load... Any more than 750 gross needs brakes fitted..
What do you plan to tow a trailer and 1000KG load with? Not a Sierra I hope...

I towed something like 1 tonne of wood in it, with the Sierra.. Across the sand tracks down to the beach! Twice! We had 2tonne, and i made 2 trips..
Why? What's wrong with a Sierra :D

Didn't need brakes, if i got off the gas for a second i'd sink and stop 8O

And really i didn't know that, i find trailer brakes very very annoying to drive with
Especially those handbrake-style ones that activate off a slide at the tow hitch, i put the clip on so it was locked open

i wouldn't tow more then 450kg with a sierra and no trailer brakes which
by the way is the factory maximum tow weight.
i have no problem towing heavy stuff however i have spent a bit of money
to be able to do it and there is no way i would tow 1000kg where there is traffic.

Post subject:  Re: Offroad Trailer Suspension Mods

this still has a maximum unbraked tow rating of 749, trust me, a sierra needs trailer brakes.

only a neglegent fucktard would tow over 750kg with no tralier brakes and probably 500kg on a zook.
Its law for a reason ,and if you dont belive me do 70 km/r down the road with a tonne on and slam the brakes on as if someone has pulled out in front of you and see how you fair.
grow up and do it right, because unfortunately it probably wont be you that you kill
there are also these cool things called ecectric brakes and they are adjustable from in the car

Holy fuck.. Can you just lay off?
I've towed over 2 tonne behind our Territory MANY MANY MANY times, never had ONE issue with braking
And my Zook pulls up on a dime, even with the trailer on and loaded up to a tonne.. So you can fuck right off with the dangerous comments
Man up

And unfortunately, you live in melbourne.. Or i'd willingly demonstrate to you how if you DON'T suck at life/driving and actually maintain the brakes of your vehicle.. It is infact VERY easy to tow almost any weight your engine can pull.

so you really are nothing but a stupid fuckwit if you belive even one word of that bullshit you just wrote.
maybe you should just stop now before you make yourself look even more stupid.
heard of something called jack knife (its when the heavy load pushes your light arse end around 90 deg when the heavy loadl on your un braked trailer wants to keep going)
children

I had my hand on a bible when i said "And that Ajsr is an asshat"
True story.

Technically jackknife when reversing is the point which your trailer is going to collide with your vehicle and because you are past the point of recovery by turning the steering wheel the opposite direction, you have no way of correcting yourself except to go forward and try again.

When your heavy trailer kicks out and "drifts" beside you, pulling you into a slide yourself, it has another name.

"FUCKING SICK"

Nah i doublechecked, it was my copy of 3wdActionMagazine
Foolysicwik'd

And i had another idea, instead of an offroad trailer why don't i add a roof basket to my Exo, and put 1 tonne of wood up there?

And i was thinking something like this?

Or incase i have friends over, i'll throw a lazy axle in the rear for extra load bearing and then pile 'em up

^^^ good argument  if i saw someone towing that much in an unbraked trailer on the road id contemplate standing on the brakes to teach em a lesson so that they dont kill someone who isnt as aware of whats going on.

just because hes a yank doesn't change the fact that he tried to stop trailer said na i dont wanna and did that.

ever put the brakes on on slippery grass and just slid for miles and been able to do nothing about it? its not all to do with the quality or how well your vehicle is maintained its the conditions of the road etc that determine when things go to shit so staking the odds in your favour is always good with brakes. I often dont agree with some of the law abiders on here but brakes are one thing i will agree on.

Imagination is a beautiful thing, and this thread should've really been in Chat, because that's all it was created for lol

But i am just a little confused, you would happily let me carry dozens of people on my roof basket.. Yet not tow a trailerload of wood?
Hypothetical or not, that's pretty clever.

On a side note, Joe.. Wow.. What a mindblowing addition to this saga of "Holy Shit Wtf is Jccck Doing Now?"

I have had exactly this happen to me. Scary as. I was towing 2 tonne (this was confirmed by a commercial weighbridge) with a Falcon wagon with electric brakes. Came to an intersection when the lights went red, and the electric brakes failed. As ajsar said, it just picks up the rear end and tries to drive it past the front of the vehicle. AKA Jackknife. The only way to prevent the jack knife was to keep driving. Luckily I was first in line and no pedestrians were crossing.

Thes guys aren't necessarily having a go at you, but trying to impart some knowledge to you from their experience.

Oh i know exactly what he's talking about.. He just had to start his "imparted knowledge" with some insults.. So i figured if he could be silly, so could i.. And when i am silly, i'm very silly :D

I wouldn't really do, ALL of the stuff ive contemplated in this thread, gosh..
I have towed the 1tonne of wood with the Zook though, through a BUSH track and over the sand dunes.. NO PROBLEMS
I'd never do it on road, no way.. I always tow stuff around our property in the Zook, saves getting the Territory out.

I am legit considering the roof basket for carrying people, maybe i could charge a far? Just joshin'

jccck i think you need to think a bit more before you speak. they are just pointing out how dangerous it is to tow a over loaded trailer.

i had a friend die when his car jack knifed on a dirt road with a trailer on the back. he was only doing about 40k at the time and was lucky that it didn't kill every one in the car.

Would have to agree that staying somewhere near your vehicles legal towing weight is a good thing.

A few weeks ago i was stopped at a servo and a there was a late 80's Nissan Pintara?????? hatch, towing a car trailer with a old F100 on it, and by the looks of it, a pile of junk in the f100s tub as well 8O . Wasn't that suprised when the 5 young fellas piled into it.

Bet they would have whinged far and wide if they got pinged bt the police

I let them get a good distance up the road before i left the servo
