As for security, you can thread a bike lock through the rim and the bracket.
Just remember to keep the lock mechanism well lubed, or it'll rust and you'll never get it off.

How rare is a flat tyre though? 15 years on the road, two 4x4s later... still waiting to pop my flat tyre cherry.


I've snagged a couple of tyres on trails pretty bad, but never bad enough so they run flat. I don't bother carrying the spare at all in the Sierra - but i'm never usually so far away from home that it'd be a major issue

I have had one flat in my life, and that was being silly in my twinky corolla, hit the gravel on the shoulder of the road, and coming back on to the road tore the side wall out of the tire...

i have a 30" spair and no one has ever toched it.

you could pull the spair off and drill a hole though the end of the stud and chuck a padlock though it? i have sceen that on caravans etc.

there is a hole in teh spare wheel carrier doing nothing, that holes purpose in life is to thread a padlock through it and the wheel, locksmith will sort you out with a padlock to fit

I've driven aver 20km on a dead flat tyre, didn't matter that it rolled off the bead, cause it had a 10mm spanner through the sidewall anyway..

I put a bolt that I drilled a hole in the end lock it with a padlock, It fits in one of the spare holes in the carrier but most auto shops sell lockable wheel nuts.

put a lockable cover over it (aluminium face plate, stainless adjustable band) like this:


my zuk came with one, although a plastic face... protects the rubber from the sun and its harder to steal - added to that they dont know what you're running as a spare.

Not cheap though.

If some one want THAT tyre, & you have bolted it to the car, what's stopping them taking the other 4 with the car attached..

you can buy a small locking cover that locks over one wheel nut most 4x4 shops sell them $20-$40

I used a padlock up till last week. I took it off cause I have never heard of anyone taking a spare and didn't want to run the risk of the padlock jamming/losing key when I need the spare.

I haven't needed a spare myself, but where I wheel, there is lots of rubbish (screws etc) I have had 2 of my mates pick up a screw, and they have only been out with me 3 times.

I did pick up a screw at work, but it didn't go down very fast so I didn't need the spare.
