hi all just a quick question on my rock lights. i have wired up a set in my old lux before,a set on my current lux and now finally finished the set in my zuk.

Have all been 55w spotties.I have 3 under my zuk,fitted yesterday and tested them but then tonight i noticed they work with no headlights on,park lights on or hi beam on but not while on low beam???

i have got power to my 30amp relay(30) from the fuse block and a 15amp fuse i think in the fuse block under the bonnet,earthed as normal and 87s out to the lights,picked up power from in the cab somewhere to the switch then out to relay again.

No worky on low

but i think the wire i must of picked up under the dash months ago when i wired switch n relay is low beam wire,which is becoming earth once i am on low beam?????sound like im close???

can you not take them entirely off the light circuit so theyre just on their own switch? Even take them off IGN so they stay on when you shut the engine off (handy during recovery etc)

sorry,let me add to this that i didnt have a test light,i wired them way back in july but only fitted lioght yesterday so im guessing as i wrote this n half thought about it that the wire i found under the dash n didnt fully use must be low beam.

was not intentional as i normally just go a power wire,which this one is until i have lights on low beam,haha works on every other setting

Wire them up ass about and you'll be fine..
Sierra headlights go negative when on.
I run my rocklights through a relay connected to the parkers and when night wheeling rarely use the headlights...




On the rear of the driver's side headlight locate the red wire with silver bands around it,

if you have a 12V electrical tester check that this wire is positive when the headlights are on and it then peculiarly goes

to negative when highbeam is on.

Clip a Scotchblock onto this wire with a piece of wire in it long enough to reach back to where you are going to

locate the relay, and attach this wire to terminal number 85.

This will be the "trigger" for the relay, the relay will always have a positive feed to the normal trigger,

and live going to the "switch" of the relay for the auxiliary spots,

so the relay will click closed only when the earth terminal gets a negative feed

(as it will normally be positive... "d'oh! my head hurts Marge!").


Take a wire off the battery's live terminal and with an inline fuse holder connect it to terminals 86 and 87,

these are the normal trigger and the input terminal of the relays switch.

Connect a wire from terminal 30 - the switched output of the relay - and connect this to the positive wire of your spotlights

, the spotlights should also be earthed to either the vehicles body or chassis, or an existing earth point

(probably the best idea I've found).

Hmm, and that's it... when you put your headlights on the wire coming from the Scothchblock attached to the red wire

with silver bands will be positive, so the relay will not click closed.

However when you "flash" your headlights or switch to mainbeam,

that red wire with the silver bands will drop from positive to negative, then, as the relay now has an earth it

will click closed and switch the positive feed to the spotlights on...

and your spots will come on so you can flash other roadusers, or when you're offroad in the dark, etc...

when i wired up my spotties for the front of the zuk i went 30 from positive on battery
86 loops with it with a short wire onto 30 on relay
87 to lights
and 85 went from high beam at headlight to switch in cab then to the 85 pin

all my problem is with my rocklights right now is that my wire to sognal/trigger relay becomes earth not power while ever im on low beam yeah?

Just out of curiosity... Where do you mount them? I cant think of a spot that wont get damaged?

i think damage is inevitable... you just buy spare lights.

if you never do anything fast then theyre way less likely to get damaged, speed + rocks would spell disaster though.

Also - ive noticed more and more LED rock lights, but hate them - they just don't throw the light as far as a traditional globe.

il get some pics of mine.pretty dodgy setup on my zuk as there was just no where to really put them whereas my hilux has them all tucked up in little spots where they cant get hit.

im sure ill break one eventually

Standard 4 or 5 pin relays....
Wire it up like in my above post and it'll work.

I have my lights mounted to the floor under the front seats where the floor steps up from the footwell and as close to the chassis as I could get them.. No damage after 12 months.
Also have another pair on the front bar.

Any good autoelectricial has a massive catalogue of ADR approved LED lights for ALL applications, thats your best bet..

The LED's can cop more of a flogging generally as well can't they?
Why not buy an LED strip and put it all along the bottom..
It won't light up as much as the 55W but still enough to work with.

PanterA used ebay LED ebay strip lighting on his flag pole & it's like a light sabre, they're able to be chopped down into lots of 3 LED. The amount of even light that it throws is pretty impressive.

A 50" bar is just a stupid amount of light.... A 20" is more than enough..
I only want a pair of 6's for my zook and a 20 for the pootrol.

Will be doing the smaller ones for bikes. LED's are the biggest/best thing to happen to motorcycles for 50 years!

I'm bringing in another brand that has higher output than the Rigid ones. I have 2 here (40 LED Euro pattern, and 60LED flood pattern) that measure 570mm and 800mm long. Both are going onto the ute. Thats about 17000 lumens from 2 lights

Jas,ill see how i go ive always just wired up relays the way i explained before and theyve worked.im guessing i was just unlucky in what wire i chose for the switch this time lol

Fat, i would of went LED strips or something, i actually started looking into it but allready had some of the 55w laying around that will do for now.It looks pretty good and is quite bright

Mitchell Bros 4x4 and more in Sydney are also a supplier of the Ridgid Industry LED light bars and duallys. Better price and service then snake too

We ran a 30" light bar at willowglen and the light they throw is just amazing.
