Post subject:  93 Vitara JLX tyre HELP!
Hoping I can get some clarification on this issue.

I have been searching for hours and reading alot about what tyres fit what and with what lift. I can confiently say i'm boggled!

Heres the deal:
I have a 93 SWB JLX Vitara Hardtop.
I have just installed an Ironman 40mm suspension lift kit and also 30mm coil spacers to rear and 15mm front. The lift is like DANG! One can only imagine how ridiculous the stock 15" rims and tyres look.

I am looking for a big as possible without body lift. I see everyone running 30's with near stock suspension but could I run 31's?? If so what metric size do these come in at? Same with the 30 inch what do they sell for in metric?
I will leave offsets for the next question, holy geez.

Appreciate some advice on tyre brands-styles. Looking for some aggresive offroad bad boys.

Bigger is not always better... engine power will drop to varying degree's, as it takes alot to turn bigger tyres with stock gearing, and wheel bearings can have a short life...

What are your driving habits, is it a daily drive, how often do you go offroad, and is it mostly easy to medium stuff, or hard to extreme, these are all factors that will decide tyre choice, AT's or MT's, but it sounds like you want to go extreme with MT's...

I recommend Maxxis tyres, in AT's or MT's, they are alot cheaper than other Big brands, but are very well made... :wink:

The problem with a suspension lift is the tyre can still compress just as much as it can stock, hence unless you extend your bumpstops to limit compression technically you cant run anything bigger than you can with no suspension lift.

Unless you want to massage the guards here and there I'd stick to probably 30x9.5 tyres (check Joes thread for an example - he is running them with the calmini 3" suspension lift). You could probably run 31s but you are going to want to extend the bumpstops and really get some use out of the hammer.

Not sure on common metric sizes for 15" rims, imperial still seems to be thr far more common measurement for em.

235 75 15 is the metric size which is pretty much a 30x9.5

Exactly what I'm after! Thanks guys. I will check out the Maxxis Bighorn? I hear people use these quite often? I really want atleast 30" so I may have to get the 1" bl and do some handy work.

Oh and 7" or 8" rims? Offsets?

I will get the black sunrasias ordered asap. Any good suppliers out there?

7s will be OK for up to 31s.

Offset is a tricky one, but anything from stock to -24ish should be fine. Go too extreme and the wheels will hit the arches at about 1/4 lock, any less and they'll be scrubbing on your chassis. You'll also need flares to cover the wider rubber sitting further out, if you haven't already.

Bighorns are meant to be good, I'm running Trepadores and can highly recommend them.

I run bighorns on my swb vitarra and can fit 235 75 15s with no lift and minimal scrub. So you should be fine with it lifted

I ran 235/75/15 BFG ATs with stock rims and stock suspension with no issues.

Offset is critical, I run -13 7" and they scrub the back of the guard, 0 or positive offset will usually clear here but get closer to the chassis

i use to run 15x7 -12 with 30's on 40mm lift.
with the offset the rears were just hitting the lip on flex and the front needed some hammer work to fit with out scrubbing.

If i put rear bumpstops in, i would have had zero scrubbing off-road.

Ive always thought you dont need anymore than that to run larger tyres on a vitara.

Those coil spacers would stop some upward movement acting like extended bump stops.

Thats great, now I have ome ammo when I go se the tyre man. Your right about the front coil spaces. THEIR STIFF!

I'm thinking of white ROH sunnies(TRAK) 15 x 7 with Maxxis Big Horn 235 75 15. Can wait to fill the guards!

So best offset for these with minimal scrubbing?
PS I like the whole tyre hanging out of the gaurds look!

From memory they come in a -10 or -12 which should suit fine.
